PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: INSIDE MEDIA: A JUSTIFIED EVENING WITH ELMORE LEONARD, TIMOTHY OLYPHANT, AND GRAHAM YOST {PUBLIC SHORT VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of seminars presented by The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles. This seminar honors "Justified," a police drama about Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, an officer with cowboy-like crime-fighting techniques.

Rene Reyes (director of public programs and festivals, The Paley Center for Media/Los Angeles) offers opening remarks before bringing moderator Andrea Grossman (founder/curator, Writers Bloc Presents) to the stage.

Grossman moderates the following panelists: executive producer/creator Graham Yost; producer Elmore Leonard, author of novels featuring "Justified" character Raylan Givens; and cast member Timothy Olyphant (Raylan Givens).

The panelists discuss topics which include: Yost being a longtime fan of Leonard's writing; the appeal of Raylan as a television hero; the benefits of having a story set in Kentucky; how Raylan differs from the character Olyphant played on HBO's "Deadwood"; Leonard's direct involvement with the show; why so many of Leonard's stories focus on a U.S. marshal; the degree to which scripts borrow from Leonard's published Raylan stories; Olyphant on how Raylan has changed since the show's premiere; the tone of "fun" inherent in "Justified"; the show's development process; the challenge of properly adapting Leonard's material for television; the sense of "loneliness" in Raylan; the plot for the Raylan novel which Leonard is currently penning; Raylan's status as a "modern-day cowboy"; and the significance of Raylan's hat.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: the vocal cadences and peculiarities of the "Justified" characters; the variety of actors who ask Yost if they can be part of the series; the show's in-depth portrayal of Kentucky's drug trade; why Kentucky's mining companies are such a prevalent theme in all of Leonard's Raylan tales; future storylines which beef up the female characters; and if the villainess played by Margo Martindale in the second season might be resurrected.
