ONCE UPON A TIME: DREAMY (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic fantasy series about the inhabitants of Storybrooke, Maine and their fairy-tale counterparts, both good and evil. In this episode, novice fairy Nova meets with her teacher, the Blue Fairy, who instructs her to keep her precious fairy dust safe. Some of it spills, however, and lands on an egg down in the mines, from which a dwarf then immediately hatches. In Storybrooke, Leroy eats breakfast alone at Granny's and Mary Margaret arrives to ask for volunteers for the Miners Day celebration. Everyone ignores her, however, and when she appeals to Leroy, he scoffs at the idea of "the town harlot and the town drunk" working together. Mary explains to Emma about the tradition of the nuns trading homemade candles for coal, knowing that the town is shunning her because of her affair with David. As the town prepares for the celebration, Leroy meets Astrid, a pretty young nun, and helps her fix the lights in the square. He confesses that his true life goal was to sail around the world, and she encourages him to believe in his dreams. Emma investigates Kathryn's disappearance, and Sidney arrives hoping for a scoop. Things begin to look suspicious when Kathryn's belongings are found in her abandoned car, and Sidney offers to get her phone records from "a source."

In the mine, the dwarf asks about the woman he saw before he hatched, but Bossy, the head dwarf, tells him that there are no females and dwarves do not fall in love. He and his brothers are sent to mine diamonds to be made into fairy dust, and his pickaxe gives him his name: Dreamy. Leroy surprises Mary by offering to sell candles after all, and when he learns that a mistake of Astrid's may cause the nuns to miss their rent payment and be evicted by Mr. Gold, he promises to sell a thousand candles and raise the sufficient funds. Emma questions David, who says that he had not spoken to Kathryn since their breakup, and she promises to find her. Dreamy runs into Nova in the mines and recognizes her as the woman he saw, and they bond when he saves her fairy dust and reassures her that she will make an excellent fairy godmother. She tells him about her plan to go see the fireflies in the world above, but he misses the cue. Leroy and Mary attempt an aggressive door-to-door method to sell their candles, but they have no luck. Upon learning that Kathryn never showed up to law school in Boston, Sidney suggests to Emma that Mary had motive to harm her, but Emma refuses to believe it. In a pub, Dreamy broods over his strange new feelings, and Belle informs him that he is in love. She explains the "wonderful" sensation and encourages him to chase it, explaining that Nova was inviting him when she mentioned the fireflies. When he goes to meet her, they decide to abandon their "jobs" and run off together to sail around the world.

Leroy goes to confess his failure to Astrid, but ends up blurting out that he sold them all. Mary angrily confronts him and notices his crush on her, but he swears he will find $5,000 soon. He attempts to sell his boat to Mr. Gold in exchange for his waiving the nuns' rent, but he refuses, claiming they are "distasteful tenants." Astrid arrives with a thank-you pie, but she spies the candles and Leroy is forced to confess his lie. Sidney shows Emma Kathryn's phone records, complete with a conversation with David the day she disappeared, suggesting that he is lying. Dreamy's dwarf pals support his plans to abscond with Nova, but Bossy and the Blue Fairy stop him, saying that he must stay and mine fairy dust and Nova must be allowed to achieve her potential of becoming a fairy godmother or else be unhappy forever. Leroy laments that Astrid was the first person to believe in him and Mary worries that she is still a pariah, but Leroy tells her to focus on the good moments she had with David and formulates a plan. He smashes the generator and plunges the Miners Day festival into a blackout, causing everyone to buy candles. Nova shows Grumpy her boat, but he tells her that they cannot be together and that their love is "a dream," claiming that as a dwarf, he cannot really love. Nova is heartbroken, and when Dreamy takes up his pickaxe in the mines again, his name has changed to Grumpy. The candles sell out and Leroy informs Astrid, who is thrilled, and he resolves to fix up his boat and chase his dream. The town seems to forgive Mary in light of her hard work at the festival, but her happiness is short-lived when Emma, having been pressured by Regina, arrives and regretfully takes David away for questioning as the whole town watches. Commercials deleted.

In the opening scenes from the following episode, "Red-Handed," David maintains that he knows nothing about Kathryn's disappearance and Emma states that she believes him, though encourages him to hire a lawyer. Ruby flirts with August at Granny's diner, intrigued by his worldly tales, but Granny interrupts and scolds her about her aimless ways, saying she wants to train her in further responsibilities for the business, and she ends up quitting in a huff. Red Riding Hood secretly greets Peter at the window, and a hunting party comes to the cabin, planning to hunt the wolf that is stalking the village. Granny dismisses them, saying that the creature is too dangerous to be killed and fortifying the house for the night, taking up her crossbow and reminding Red to wear her protective cloak. In the morning, Red discovers Snow hiding from the Queen in the henhouse. When they go to the well, they are horrified to see the mangled bodies of the hunting party, clearly having been savaged by the wolf.
