NEW GIRL: INJURED (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about an awkward young teacher, Jess, who moves in with three male roommates after a breakup. During a friendly game of football in the park, Jess tackles Nick and accidentally injures his back. He tries to drive off, but only succeeds in crashing into Winston's car, which is already old and beat-up. Nick does not have health insurance and refuses to see a doctor, but Jess manages to convince him to see her friend Sadie, an OB/GYN who will not charge him. Meanwhile, Winston attempts to get his car repaired, but the shop refuses due to the cumulative damage being too extensive. Despite this, Winston refuses to part with the car, as he has too many memories associated with it. Sadie "unofficially" diagnoses Nick's back pain and prescribes him medication. However, she also notices that Nick has a growth in his thyroid; he says he is already aware of it and insists it is nothing to worry about. Sadie asks him to come in for an ultrasound the next day so she can determine what it is, although Nick says he can't afford it. He makes various excuses as to why he cannot go for his ultrasound. Jess, concerned, tells Winston and Schmidt about it and they accompany Nick at his bartending job, as does Cece. Using information from the internet, Jess, Winston, and Schmidt come to believe that Nick could have fatal thyroid cancer. They inform Nick of this and the four of them become emotional over the matter. Jess tries to cheer up Nick, who is somewhat disoriented due to the pills for his back pain. He tells Jess he doesn't want her speaking at his funeral since she "doesn't know how to be real." After the bar closes the five of them engage in an impromptu musical session, interrupted by Jess. She decides to "get real" and confronts Nick over his lack of any desire to better himself or accomplish anything. Nick responds that he can't do anything unless he knows how it will end. Jess gets the idea to take Nick and the others down to the beach, and they convince him to take off his clothes and jump in the water. Nick does so but immediately gets out due to the cold, yelling at Jess and going off by himself. Schmidt wonders how he will cope with the loss of Nick and Cece reveals she went through a similar situation when her father passed away. Nick, calming down, tells Jess that she's right about him and that he enjoys her company. They all wait on the beach until morning and drive Nick to his ultrasound. The ultrasound reveals that Nick does not have cancer after all, and the other four are overjoyed. Nick discovers that Jess and the others split the bill for his ultrasound, and he promises to pay them back. Jess doesn't tell Nick the details of the previous night, which he cannot remember. Winston's car refuses to start and everyone except him gets out. The episode ends as Winston finally abandons the car, much to his dismay. Commercials deleted.
