PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: INSIDE MEDIA: SHE'S MAKING NEWS: KATIE COURIC {LONG VERSION ANAMORPHIC}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's Inside Media "She's Making News" events. Held at the Paley Center in New York, this evening celebrates the career of journalist Katie Couric. The program begins with a clip package of Couric's many news reports, including political stories and events around the world, as well as interviews with pop culture celebrities.

Host Pat Mitchell (president and CEO, The Paley Center for Media) then takes the stage with Couric. The conversation touches on such topics as: Couric's "atypical" presence in the media world; her early days of reporting and questionable fashion choices; her experiences receiving negative reviews and choosing to work harder to be taken seriously in response; a memorable interview with Barbara Bush in which she then had to improvise questions for the president; recollections of the "otherworldly" experience of interviewing Columbine victims' families immediately after the incident; her enjoyment of her "fun" experiences on "The Today Show"; the pressures on female journalists to choose between "frivolous" and "serious" news reporting; the death of her husband Jay Monahan in 1998 from colon cancer, and her activism with cancer research and prevention as a result; memories of her father and his writing of his own obituary; her much-discussed decision to leave "The Today Show" to join "CBS Evening News"; the difficulties of handling the public's criticism, and sound advice from her daughter; the "blatant sexism" in much of the commentary about her work; her infamous interview with Vice-Presidential hopeful Sarah Palin and her memories of the 2008 Presidential race; her frustration with the gender-biased coverage of Hillary Clinton's campaign, as discussed in the documentary film "Miss Representation" (ACCNUM 106337); her sense of a recent "backlash against feminism"; her new talk show "Katie," set to begin in September 2012; her hopes to be a "friend-slash-aggregator" to the audience; a surprisingly substantive interview with "Sex and the City" star Sarah Jessica Parker; her book "The Best Advice I Ever Got: Lessons From Extraordinary Lives," a collection of essays from notable figures; and Couric's own "best advice" from her parents.

Couric then closes the evening with a reading from her book, an essay penned by Couric herself on how to "find the joy."

Clips featuring Couric's work are interspersed throughout the program, including: "The Today Show," "CBS Evening News," and the 2012 HBO film "Game Change," which recreates Couric's interview with Palin.
