PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: INSIDE MEDIA: MISSING {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of seminars presented by The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles. This seminar honors "Missing," a dramatic series about a former CIA agent's international search for her kidnapped son.
Host Rene Reyes (director of public programs and festivals, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks and introduces moderator Tanner Stransky (journalist and blogger, Entertainment Weekly), who brings executive producers Gina Matthews, Grant Scharbo, and Gregory Poirier to the stage. They briefly discuss the episode "The Three Bears," which is then screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 107641.)
After the screening, Stransky introduces the panelists: Matthews; Scharbo; Poirier; and cast members Ashley Judd (Becca Winstone), and Nick Eversman (Michael Winstone).
The panelists touch on such topics as: Matthews' idea for the show based on her experience as a parent and desire to create "television for the world"; the duality of Becca as a mother and a secret agent; the focus on characterization and the "emotional spine" of episodes; Judd's perception of the current "golden age" of television and interest in the "irresistible" pilot; comparisons of Becca to the tough Jack Bauer of "24"; elaboration on the show's many different European settings, all shot on location; Eversman's friendship with co-star Tereza Vorísková (Oksana), famous in her hometown of Prague; Judd's exploration of the various cities on her days off; the show's positive reception overseas; the authentic casting of many non-American actors; Judd's use of "frames of reference" from her own life for Becca's experiences and emotional journey; Eversman's rapid casting and travel to Prague for the first episode; his belief in Michael's compassionate nature; and speculation about a second season and the producers' interest in creating a "satisfying" final episode.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: Judd's hiatus from acting and the "providence" of her return; the process of pitching the show and relatively low cost of filming abroad; Judd's interest in "personal integration" and her sense of the character's blended vulnerability and strength; their commitment to creating a "physics-based show" with realistic action scenes; Judd's role as co-executive producer and her influence on the show's writing; and Judd's interest in adding a subplot about human trafficking.
