Pat Mitchell (president and CEO, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks before introducing Tomlin to the stage.

They touch on such topics as: Tomlin's comedy influences when she was a child and her early gravitation towards the stage; how people from her old neighborhood served as inspiration for her various characters; how female comedians on television were perceived during Tomlin's youth; her recollection of her work on the television shows "Music Scene" and "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In"; the sudden popularity of Tomlin and her characters on "Laugh-In"; Tomlin's sense of psychological separation from her various characters; her experiences growing up in Detroit and how it colored her comedic style; how her character Ernestine took on a life of her own beyond Tomlin's original conception; her first meeting with her longtime collaborator Jane Wagner and how their creative relationship began; the success of Tomlin and Wagner's stage play "The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe" and Tomlin's reflections on the themes of the play; how Tomlin selects her more dramatic roles; Tomlin's recent work on the Showtime series "Web Therapy"; and Tomlin's online presence and how she feels about both ridicule and reviews on the internet. Tomlin concludes by reading an introduction from a re-issue of "The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe" written by Wagner, and with a brief monologue delivered by her Ernestine character.

Clips are interspersed throughout, including: Tomlin's first television appearance on "The Garry Moore Show" (1966); Tomlin on her self-titled show "Lily" (1975); a package of clips featuring Tomlin performing as several of her television characters, including Tommy Velure, Judith Beasley, Ernestine, and Edith Ann; clips from the filmed version of "The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe" (1991); a clip from the television show "Damages" (2010); a selection from the television show "Homicide" (1996); a promotion for Tomlin's new television series "Malibu Country" (2012-2013); a clip of Tomlin with Lisa Kudrow on the Showtime series "Web Therapy" (2011-2015); and selections from "City Adventures with Edith Ann," an educational app featuring one of Tomlin's characters.
