PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: AN EVENING WITH UP ALL NIGHT {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of seminars presented by The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles. This seminar hosts a screening of the first season finale of "Up All Night," a comedy series about the lives and trials of a married couple, Reagan and Chris Brinkley, attempting to raise their infant daughter Amy. Rene Reyes (director of public programs and festivals, The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles) offers opening remarks before introducing moderator Rob Moynihan (editor, TV Guide). Moynihan offers his own comments before introducing producer and cast member Christina Applegate (Reagan Brinkley).Applegate makes her own remarks before introducing the episode "The Proposals," screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 107860). Moynihan moderates the following panelists: Applegate; and cast members Will Arnett (Chris Brinkley), and Maya Rudolph (Ava Alexander). The panelists touch on such topics as: how the cast of "Up All Night" relate to their characters, especially in comparison to their real-life experiences as parents; Arnett on how his "Up All Night" character differs from his usual roles; how the birth of Applegate's character's child had many similarities to Applegate's real-life pregnancy; Rudolph on her character being "self-absorbed, but not harmful" and the character's relationship with children; Rudolph's collaboration with show creator Emily Spivy on "Saturday Night Live"; some of the relationship dynamics between the three main characters; an amusing anecdote involving fellow cast member Chris Diamantopoulos (Julian); Rudolph's character's love life and its potential future; what the panelists hope might be explored in the show's second season; the babies who portray Amy and the casts' affinity for them; some of the show's guest stars, such as Henry Winkler (Marty Alexander) and Stevie Nicks (Herself); and how the show's plotline tests Applegate and Arnett's characters' marriage and the "strength" of their relationship. Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: the possibility of a plotline on the show involving Arnett's character teaching his daughter to ice-skate; recollections of how the cast first signed on to the show; the show's use of profanity; actors the panelists would like to guest-star on "Up All Night"; the level of improvisation that the cast are allowed to engage in; and Rudolph's work on the hospital drama series "City of Angels."
