EUREKA: DOUBLE TAKE (TV)

Summary

One in this Syfy Channel original fantasy/science-fiction series chronicling the adventures of the sheriff of a secret town filled with scientists. Allison begins to notice that certain people around town are behaving strangely. Henry releases Grace from detainment while Jack and Andy start arresting people seemingly at random. Zane is held by Major Shaw but released when he discovers Grace has escaped. Allison voices her suspicions to Fargo, and a number of clues eventually lead them to the truth: the NPCs from the Matrix-Eureka are downloading themselves into body doubles of the Eureka townsfolk and placing the real people in the Matrix, essentially replacing them; Holly appears to be behind it all since her mental programming was tampered with due to the smart dust. They inform Zane of this plot as well. Attempts to send for help fail, and Fargo cannot convince Major Shaw to aid them. The body double of Jo tries to help Major Shaw track down Grace. Zane tries to convince Dr. Parrish to help. He doesn't believe him until they encounter Dr. Parrish's body double. The false Parrish tries to convince Zane that he is the real one, but Zane is not fooled and vaporizes him with an experimental energy weapon. Dr. Parrish and Zane get the idea to develop a nonlethal electromagnetic pulse weapon specifically designed to disable all of the body doubles. Fargo is approached by Holly, who claims that the NPCs have been controlling her mind intermittently and making her create the body doubles. Allison goes home to look after her children, only to find that the false Jack is already there, holding Jenna. Allison tries to explain the situation to Kevin and Jenna. S.A.R.A.H. detects that "Jack's" cells are only a day old and disables him with a laser beam, allowing Allison to handcuff him. She gets a call from Zane and Dr. Parrish to tell her about their EMP weapon. They require an NPC test subject and Allison agrees to bring the false Jack over for that purpose. Holly leads Fargo out into the woods under the pretense of showing him the NPC base. He sees through her ruse and knocks her unconscious. While driving him to General Dynamics, Allison learns that the body doubles are essentially following their last command to keep the Astraeus crew "safe." The doubles put General Dynamics on lockdown just as Zane and Dr. Parrish finish their EMP weapon. A roadblock is set up to stop Allison, but she rams through it and escapes from the fiery wreckage of her car into the woods. The false Jo and false Andy free the false Jack and they pursue her. Zane and Dr. Parrish cannot get through the lockdown without being detected. Dr. Parrish devises a plan to pose as his own body double and make it seem that he has taken Zane prisoner. However, this plan immediately fails and both of them are taken to be put into the Matrix along with the others. Allison manages to escape the grasp of the body doubles and flags down Fargo driving along in his car, they make off with the unconscious Holly in the back seat. They wait at Jack's cabin for Zane and Dr. Parrish, who don't show up. They realize they have been captured but Allison believes Zane still has the EMP device on his person. In order to get it, she and Fargo leave Holly out in the woods for the NPCs to find, secretly following them back to their base. They find the base in an old warehouse where Allison discovers that virtually the entire town is in the grip of the Matrix, joined together in a massive hive-mind. She finds and unplugs the real Jack, attempting to wake him up. Fargo attempts to use the smart dust to broadcast the EMP's signal, but sets off an alarm and is chased by the NPCs. They corner him, but he manages to elude them by activating the smart dust remotely, blocking their sight. Allison manages to find the EMP device but she is momentarily distracted by a body double of Jenna before the false Jack sneaks up behind her and disarms her of the device. Fargo cannot evade the doubles for long and he is captured. The false Jack attempts to place Allison in the Matrix, but he is stopped by the real Jack, finally awakened. Jack frees Allison as the false Jack shoots at them, but the two of them manage to escape with the EMP device. Allison gets the idea to lure the NPCs to the cabin and use its satellite dish as a means of broadcasting the EMP wave. The NPCs are not far behind, but the false Jack breaks off from the pursuit group. Allison and Jack attempt to secure the cabin but the false Jack breaks in and struggles with the real Jack. The NPCs surround the house and break in, but Allison activates the EMP device in time, knocking all of the body doubles unconscious and saving Jack. Two weeks later the body doubles are kept in stasis, as there are ethical dilemmas with killing them. Holly awakens from a coma, but all her memories after arriving in Eureka have been erased, upsetting Fargo. Jack talks to Allison about possibly leaving Eureka until they receive bad news from Major Shaw: in light of recent events, the Department of Defense has decided to retract all of its funding for General Dynamics, essentially shutting down the town of Eureka. The episode ends as a procession of military vehicles move into the town. Commercials deleted. Also includes a segment from the next and final episode "Just Another Day," where the people of Eureka deal with the consequences of the Department of Defense shutting down the town and contemplate their futures.
