666 PARK AVENUE: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first in this supernatural drama series about the owners and residents of a mysterious, elite New York City apartment building. In this episode, a concert violinist begins bleeding from his hands, and he receives a phone call saying that his ten years are up, having made a "deal" to become a talented musician. He attempts to flee his home, the Drake Building at 666 Park Avenue, but is sucked back inside by a mysterious force. Sometime later, Henry Martin and Jane Van Veen arrive for an interview to be the building's new managers. They meet Gavin and Olivia Doran, the owners, in their penthouse, and though Gavin is at first unimpressed with them, Jane's savvy comments about the building's vintage architecture and potential safety hazards change his mind. The doorman, Tony, gives them a tour, and they meet their neighbor Brian, a struggling playwright, in the hall. Tony shows them to their gorgeous new apartment, saying that the previous resident, the violinist, moved "somewhere warmer," and the couple marvels at their new home. Olivia praises Gavin's choice of managers, saying that Jane will help them "get" Henry. At home with his wife Louise, Brian attempts to write, but is distracted by his pretty blonde neighbor across the street. Jane and Henry move in and meet another neighbor, John Barlow, and Jane notices that his hand is strangely bloody.
Gavin gives Jane instructions for her new job, and when she mentions John, Gavin says that his wife Mary recently died. Olivia invites Jane and Henry to a black-tie cocktail party, and the couple privately frets that they have nothing to wear. As she inspects the building, Jane meets Nona, who mentions that there is a petty thief in the building. In the basement, she finds an elaborate dragon mosaic on the floor, failing to notice the ghostly figure behind her. She tells Henry about her findings, wondering about the room's original purpose. It is revealed that John committed murder on Gavin's orders in exchange for a favor, and he finds his wife Mary alive once again in their bedroom. Louise, a photographer, is angry when her assistant abruptly quits, and Brian offers to help her, still keeping an eye on the blonde. Henry goes to the golf range with Gavin and they discuss the merits of ambition and risk, and a Daniel Stone approaches, telling Gavin to "back off" of a certain property dispute, which Henry realizes concerns him in his job at the mayor's office. Olivia takes Jane dress-shopping for the party, mentioning that she had a daughter who died long ago. Jane is embarrassed by the hefty price tags and declines Olivia's offer to treat her, which seems to offend her. Louise brings home a new assistant, Alexis, who is none other than Brian's blonde neighbor. Jane goes to the library to research the history of the Drake, also learning that Mary Barlow committed suicide by jumping from an asylum window. Elsewhere, Mary begins behaving strangely, and Gavin tells John that he must kill again in order to continue "renting" her life.
Jane tells Henry that the Drake once housed "the Order of the Dragon," showing him a photo of the basement with the mosaic and a door, which is now walled up. She is then shocked to receive one of the expensive dresses from Olivia, and they head to the cocktail party. Alexis gives Brian a private show at her window, and as he leaves for dinner with Louise, she is crushed in the elevator door and seriously hurt. Nona breaks in and steals a necklace of Jane's, and John is given another name, but finds he cannot bring himself to kill the man. Jane gets a strange sensation from Gavin while at the symphony and wonders about their new life at the Drake, but Henry reassures her. Gavin finds John and scolds him for his failure, saying that Mary is "going back," and John too is seemingly consumed by the building itself. Jane hears noises and, finding the mysterious basement door, witnesses Mary throwing herself from the roof again, and in the morning she is unsure if it was in fact a dream. Later, Gavin invites Jane to help in restoring the building to its "original glory" through her background research, and she and Henry sign the contracts for their new jobs. At the same time, Nona inspects Jane's necklace and has a vision of her tied up, in mortal peril. Commercials deleted.
