MODERN FAMILY: DISNEYLAND (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, the entire clan prepares for a day at Disneyland, though Manny is more preoccupied with his stock-market school project. Jay urges Gloria to eschew her usual high heels in favor of more comfortable shoes, and Claire invites the wholesome young Ethan to join them, hoping to distract Haley from her usual interest in "bad boys." Cam and Mitch shamefacedly place Lily in a "child safety tether," as she has a habit of running away in public, and Claire is frustrated when they run into none other than Dylan, Haley's "edgy" ex-boyfriend. Phil eagerly heads off to some death-defying rides with Luke as Manny frets about his school project and Jay recalls his last visit to Disneyland several decades earlier after a particularly bad fight with Dede. Ethan bonds with Alex rather than Haley as Claire complains to her father that she could "run Haley's life for her" if given the chance. Phil, the self-professor "King of the Roller Coasters," is upset when he quickly grows queasy on the rides, and Lily proves her fathers' point when she is freed from the leash and immediately runs off.
Gloria unconvincingly denies that her feet are in great pain, but she is touched when Jay, who is not fooled, buys her a pair of novelty slippers to wear instead. Haley tells her mother that she prefers Dylan's "free spirit" to Ethan's more tame nature, but Claire is highly amused to spot "rebellious" Dylan working as a "Dapper Dan," one of the park's traditional Main Street singing quartets. A nauseated Phil is relieved when Luke assures him that they will continue doing fun father-son activities well into Phil's old age, and Gloria finally convinces Manny to abandon his academic concerns and enjoy his day at the park. Jay solves the Lily problem by purchasing her a pair of somewhat inappropriate "baby high heels" – in which she cannot run – and a bear-suited Dylan finds Haley and declares his ongoing love for her, leading to a conflict with Ethan. Phil is delighted to realize that, rather than suddenly outgrowing roller coasters, he has simply come down with the flu, and the family resignedly accepts Dylan back into the fold as Haley reunites with him. At the Hall of Presidents ride, Jay explains that Lincoln's wise words convinced him to stay with Dede for the sake of his children all those years ago – and that "the universe rewarded him" many years later. Includes commercials and promos.
