MODERN FAMILY: SEND OUT THE CLOWNS (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, Cameron sadly attends the funeral of one of his clown college "mentors," and Alex and Haley are alarmed when Claire begs to be their friend on Facebook. Phil is excited by the prospect of landing a huge listing at work, and Manny announces that he is having a friend from school, Griffin, over to the house. Jay is suspicious, however, feeling that the super-cool Griffin is only befriending dorky Manny because he was impressed by Jay's motorcycle. Phil encounters notorious poacher Mitzi Roth at the house in question, and she shamelessly makes him look bad in front of the sellers. Cam is surprised to encounter his former clown "partner" Lewis at the funeral, aware that Lewis still resents him for ending their double act to settle down with Mitchell. The clowns head out for drinks, and Mitch is annoyed when Lewis and Cam return home in the early morning and amuse Lily with their buffoonish routine.

Phil bitterly tells his children that Mitzi stole the listing by "playing dirty," and Luke suggests that he respond in kind and secretly record her "confession" with his spy pen. When Griffin arrives, Gloria immediately deduces that he is actually interested in her, not in Jay's apparent coolness, though when Manny overhears that Griffin does not truly like him as a friend, he explains that he himself is only interested in Griffin's sister and considers it a "win-win." Cam and Lewis decide to reteam to perform at a child's birthday party, and Mitch cannot argue when Cam accuses him of "hating his clown side." Phil's plan fails when Mitzi steals his spy pen, but she later encounters Luke at the grocery store and seems affected when he sadly explains that "best dad ever" Phil is greatly troubled by losing the sale. Lewis takes offense when Cam tells him that their reunion is a one-time thing only, and he vents his frustration on him during a slapstick comedy routine in front of several oblivious children and a shocked Mitch. Phil is elated when Mitzi concedes the sale to him, revealing that he and Luke planned the supermarket encounter as a ruse, and Claire's Facebook excitement is short-lived when her daughters catch sight of some embarrassing college-era photos on her profile. Includes commercials and promos.
