PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: RETRO ACTION-ADVENTURE-THON: THE MAN FROM ATLANTIS: SCREENING AND CONVERSATION WITH PATRICK DUFFY {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of seminars presented by The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles. This seminar, a part of the Paley Center's "Retro Action-Adventure-Thon," celebrating action-adventure television shows of the 1970's, spotlights "Man from Atlantis," a fantasy/science-fiction series about a man physiologically adapted to undersea life and his efforts to explore and protect the oceans with the help of the crew of a hi-tech submarine. Rene Reyes (director of public programs, The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles) offers opening remarks before introducing moderator Will Keck (senior editor, TV Guide). Keck offers his own comments before introducing the episode "Melt Down," screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 108561). Keck moderates the following guests: cast members Belinda J. Montgomery (Dr. Elizabeth Merrill) and Patrick Duffy (Mark Harris). Topics of discussion include: Montgomery and Duffy's thoughts on meeting each other again for the first time since the conclusion of the series; the show's perception as being "campy"; Duffy's recollections of his audition for the part of Mark Harris and how the studio initially refused him for the role; how Duffy was forced to gain muscle mass to qualify for the part; the "water test" he underwent for the role; the romantic tension between Duffy and Montgomery's characters; Duffy's relationship with recurring guest actor Victor Buono (Mr. Schubert); some of the difficult technical aspects of filming the series, particularly Duffy's underwater segments; the show's unexpected international success; the evolution of Duffy's character throughout the series; merchandising based on the show, including a cancelled line of action figures; Duffy on filming scenes alongside oceanic life for portions of the show; and some of the famous locations used for filming. Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: an unpublished trilogy of novels written by Duffy exploring the origins of his "Man from Atlantis" character; Duffy's role on the web series "Patrick Duffy and the Crab"; input from the network censors in relation to Duffy's costume on the series; and some of the show's notable guest stars.
