HAPPY ENDINGS: THE ST. VALENTINE'S DAY MAXSSACRE (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about six Chicago friends trying to keep their group together after a romantic upheaval.
Everyone is planning for Valentine’s Day: Penny is waiting for it to be over so she can break up with her latest boyfriend, Brad is hoping to surprise Jane, Max is hoping to get increased business for his limousine service, and Dave is planning a special dinner for Lindsay, the “crazy sex girl” he is dating. Alex is excited about Valentine’s Day, although Jane views it as little more than a corporate mockery. Alex has been invited to a singles party for Valentine’s Day and hopes she will meet someone special there, despite the main feature of the party being a “keg race.” Dave criticizes Penny for stringing along her boyfriend just to eventually dump him, but she believes that Lindsay is doing the same to him. In order to mitigate Jane’s usual violent reaction upon being surprised, Brad draws up a list of things he intends to surprise her with on Valentine’s Day, a concept which meets with her approval. Brad goes to the dentist and is surprised to learn that he has a cavity despite his prior record of flawless dental health. The dentist is forced to drill it out, and a panicked Brad insists on being anesthetized during the procedure.
Jane prepares for her night out with Brad, but he has an averse reaction to the anesthetic and goes on a bender through the dentist’s office. Penny struggles to get out of her date, but fails. Alex tries to reach her party but is arrested by an undercover policeman after being mistaken for a prostitute. Lindsay shows up at Dave’s place for their dinner, but Dave puts little effort into the night, convinced that she intends to break up with him. Max picks up Alex from the police station and she changes her mind about attending her party, instead choosing to “help other people find love.” Things go awry when Max’s ex-boyfriend Grant enters his limousine. Brad still attempts to be romantic with Jane despite his impaired mental state. Dave confronts Lindsay about her apparent attempts to break up with him, however, Lindsay was not intending to do so, having even arranged to participate in a threesome with him and her friend. However, in light of his behavior they leave, much to Dave’s disappointment. Alex believes that Max still has feelings for Grant, who broke up with Max on the previous year’s Valentine’s Day for ignoring him. Max lets Grant and his new boyfriend out of the limousine, but Grant recognizes him. Grant’s new boyfriend resents meeting one of Grant’s many ex-boyfriends and storms off. Penny shows up and announces that her boyfriend decided to dump her instead of vice-versa. Soon the three of them pick up Dave, Brad, and Jane and learn of their various failed attempts at romance.
However, Grant texts Max and tells him that his latest boyfriend just broke up with him. Alex becomes convinced that Max is meant to find love on Valentine’s Day and convinces everyone to help him try to win Grant back. Max confronts Grant and apologizes for ruining two Valentine’s Days, and gets him to go out with him by using leftover romantic setpieces from Brad’s planned date with Jane, including a horse-drawn carriage. Alex is satisfied that she and the others have at least improved someone’s romantic life, if not their own. Includes commercials.
