LOST: DEAD IS DEAD (TV)
Summary
One in this fantasy drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors forced to live with each other on a remote and mysterious island. Characters' past lives are told through frequent flashbacks. In this episode, in the past, a younger Charles Widmore upbraids Richard for bringing young Ben back to their camp, but Richard maintains that "the island chose him." Ben, recovering from Sayid's gunshot, tells Widmore that he wishes to be "one of them" and escape his father. In the present, Ben is astounded to see Locke, whom he murdered, seemingly alive and well, and he states that he came back to the island to be judged by "the monster." Ben spots the mysterious crate on the beach and, when Caesar notes that Locke identified Ben as his murderer, suggests that Locke was not on the plane and is a dangerous madman. In the past, Ben and a teenage Ethan find the French survivors' camp, and Ben steals Alex from a distraught Danielle, ordering her to run whenever she hears "the whispers" if she wishes to survive. Locke finds Ben in his office and addresses "the elephant in the room," and Ben awkwardly explains that Locke had to die in order to reunite the Oceanic Six, and that murdering him after he revealed the information about Eloise Hawking was a necessary "shortcut" in the best interest of the island.
Ben and Locke prepare to travel to the main island, and Ben ruthlessly murders Caesar when he objects, calling it his "apology" to Locke. As they head back to Ben's former home, Locke notes that Ben's true guilt, for which he must be "judged," lies in his responsibility for his daughter's death. In the past, Charles scolds Ben for failing to kill Danielle and her child, as Jacob apparently instructed, but finds that even he cannot bring himself to harm the infant Alex and allows Ben to keep her. Locke and Ben find Sun and Lapidus in Ben's house, and Ben is stunned when they show him the photograph, given to them by Christian, showing the Oceanic survivors as members of the Dharma Initiative in the '70s. Lapidus and Sun are equally stunned to see Locke, who cannot sufficiently explain how he came "back to life," and though a highly suspicious Lapidus decides to leave, Sun remains determined to find Jin and stays with Ben. Ben summons the smoke monster with a drain underneath the house, and in the past, he bids a cool goodbye to Widmore, who has been banished from the island for breaking the rules, including leaving without permission and having a child with an outsider. Widmore, however, warns Ben that the island wants Alex dead and that Ben too will soon find himself exiled and alone.
Sun wonders if Jack lied about Locke's demise, but Ben assures her that "dead is dead" and admits that despite his knowledge of the island's capabilities, Locke's apparent resurrection frightens him deeply. Off the island, Ben calls Widmore and smugly informs him that he intends to return to the island, but plans to kill Penny first in retaliation for Alex. When the smoke monster fails to appear, Locke takes Ben to the temple where Ben was healed as a child, claiming that he is following inexplicable instincts. Ben ventures underground, asking Sun to apologize to Desmond for him if given the chance. In the recent past, Ben prepares to shoot Penny, though he is distracted by the sight of her son Charlie, and Desmond viciously beats him into submission before he can exact his revenge. Lapidus returns to the beach and finds that Ilana and Bram are now armed, and they knock him out when he is unable to tell them "what lies in the shadow of the statue." Ben acknowledges his part in Alex's death before falling into a pit in the temple, and Locke disappears moments before the smoke monster appears and "judges" Ben, showing him his memories of his life with Alex. Alex then appears to Ben and furiously orders him not to kill Locke – again – and to obey his orders, and Ben desperately agrees. She vanishes, and when Locke reappears, Ben emotionally states that "it let him live." Includes commercials and promos.
