PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: INSIDE MEDIA: AN EVENING WITH HAPPY ENDINGS AND DON'T TRUST THE B---- IN APARTMENT 23 {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's Inside Media events. Held at the Paley Center in Los Angeles, this evening celebrates two comedies: "Happy Endings," the series about six Chicago friends trying to keep their group together after a romantic upheaval, and "Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23," about Indiana native June Colburn and her adventures with her outrageous roommate Chloe in New York City. Host Rene Reyes (director of public programs and festivals, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks and introduces moderator Maggie Furlong (television critic, The Huffington Post). Furlong then introduces the "Endings" third-season premiere, "Cazsh Dummy Spillionaires," and "Apartment" second-season premiere "A Reunion…", both of which are screened in their entireties. (For synopses and credits, see ACCNUMs 108880 and 108879.)

After the screenings, Furlong moderates the following panelists: from "Apartment," executive producers David Hemingson and Jeff Morton; creator/executive producer/writer Nahnatchka Khan; and cast members James Van Der Beek (himself), Dreama Walker (June Colburn), Eric Andre (Mark Reynolds), Michael Blaiklock (Eli Webber), and Ray Ford (Luther Wilson); and from "Endings": executive producers Josh Bycel and Jonathan Groff; creator/executive producer/writer David Caspe; and cast members Eliza Coupe (Jane Kerkovich-Williams), Elisha Cuthbert (Alex Kerkovich), Zachary Knighton (Dave Rose), Adam Pally (Max Blum), Damon Wayans, Jr. (Brad Williams), and Casey Wilson (Penny Hartz).

The panelists touch on such topics as: the reunion of Alex and Dave in the "Endings" season premiere; Wilson's harrowing experience wearing a body cast in the episode; the introduction of Jane and Alex's parents, played by Christopher McDonald and Julie Hagerty; Van Der Beek's experience playing a parody of himself on "Apartment 23" and the fun of inventing absurd fake projects from his history; Pally's blunt opinions of "Grey's Anatomy" star Patrick Dempsey; Walker's sense of June's hidden strengths; an upcoming flashback episode of "Endings" explaining how the group became friends; an upcoming episode in which Max and Brad take jobs as "bar mitzvah motivators"; another episode featuring a "dance-off"; the Halloween episode of "Apartment 23" in which Van Der Beek hosts a "positivity party" due to his fear of the holiday; examples of the actors' outlandish suggestions actually making it onto the shows; and Pally's dislike of "the bear episode" in which he had no dialogue.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: their complex and busy shooting schedules; their ideal guest stars, including Van Der Beek's "Dawson's Creek" co-star Katie Holmes; who they would play if they could trade characters; their picks from their co-stars in the "shag, marry, kill" game; a messy scene involving Blaiklock and a lot of jam; the long process of making "Apartment 23" and Khan's other attempted sitcoms; notes from the network and the show's "bitch allotment" and dialogue rules; whether either show will attempt a live episode, with comparisons to "Mystery Science Theatre 2000"; ABC's disapproval of a subplot involving Brad's ventriloquist dummy "Sin-Brad" on "Endings"; appealing to an audience of widely-ranging ages; "Apartment 23"'s strong secondary characters and Mark's secret crush on June; James and June's budding friendship; the writers' "fearlessness" in altering the characters' lives on "Endings" and whether the luckless Penny will ever find romance; an upcoming love interest played by Nick Zano; Wilson's memorable roles on "Saturday Night Live"; and the return of Megan Mullally as Dana Hartz, Penny's mother.
