BULLWINKLE SHOW, THE: UPSIDAISIUM {EP. 79, 80} (TV)

Summary

One in this animated series about two friends – a gormless moose named Bullwinkle and an intelligent flying squirrel named Rocky -- and their frequent encounters with their arch enemies, Soviet spies Boris Badenov and Natasha. Rocky soon discovers that the mountain is moving, and that its culprits are "Mojave Max" and "Death Valley Dottie," operating a jet engine of their own. They give chase, but are thrown off when Boris's fake beard comes off and lands in Bullwinkle's face, throwing him off long enough for them to escape. Rocky and Bullwinkle inform Captain Peachfuzz of their discovery, but he insists they still cannot inform the government due to the mountain's secrecy. However, a small mountain town catches sight of Mount Flatten during its flight, and soon informs the rest of the world media, and an honor guard of jet fighters is dispatched to fly alongside the mountain and escort it to Washington. Mr. Big confers with Boris, ordering him to blow up the mountain rather than allow it to fall into the government's hands. He explains the reasons why Pottsylvania was interested in acquiring upsidaisium: mass production of a car grew so out-of-control that parking and traffic congestion had completely paralyzed the nation. A scientist devised a solution: construct vehicles incorporating upsidaisium components, thus allowing them to float and solve the congestion issues. If they failed to obtain upsidaisium, they were to destroy it so as not to allow anyone else to have it. Boris is distressed when Mr. Big orders him to destroy himself along with the mountain. Also includes an "Aesop and Son" story about a crow who dreams of being a peacock in order to become more attractive. He tries to purchase a peacock tail, but a pair of peacocks tricks him by selling him an old feather-duster dipped in paint. The crow happily accepts his new "tail" and tries to woo a female peacock, but he fails and the duster collapses. The dust causes the crow to start sneezing, but he attributes this to a freak snowstorm and goes outside in a trench coat. He tries to hit on a lady crow, but she takes him for some sort of freak and alerts the police, who arrest him and put him in jail for some time. However, upon his release the crow decides he would like to try to be a stork, having learned nothing from his ordeal. Aesop Junior remarks that the moral of this fable isn't particularly good. In "Peabody's Improbable History," Sherman and Peabody travel back to the year 1806 to meet Zebulon Pike, Jr. during his ascent of what would come to be known as Pike's Peak. They arrive to find that Pike has been putting off his ascent of the mountain for months, much to his men's confusion. He reveals to Sherman and Peabody that he is secretly acrophobic, and thus scared to climb the mountain. However, Peabody and Sherman trick him into starting the ascent by organizing a baseball game with his climbing team and convincing Pike to serve as an outfielder. As the game progresses the playing field gets steadily moved up the mountain, and Pike moves along with it up the slope, unaware of what is going on. The party sleeps at the halfway point up the slope and Pike goes outside to sleep, awoken by Sherman's tossing and turning. The next morning he realizes where he is and Peabody stops Pike from accidentally falling off the edge. He is too scared to continue the climb, but Peabody tricks him into arriving at the peak by attaching an image of Death Valley, an area two hundred feet below sea level, to the inside of his spectacles, thus making him forget his true location. Other highlights include: a reading of the poem "Simple Simon" in "Bullwinkle's Corner;" and the "World of Commander McBragg" segment "Football by Hex," wherein the commander recounts the events of one of his college football games.
