SOLID GOLD {DIONNE WARWICK; CULTURE CLUB; ARSENIO HALL; TEARS FOR FEARS; WHAM!; BILLY OCEAN; RICK NELSON; SISTER SLEDGE} (TV)

Summary

One in this musical/variety series.

In this episode, host Dionne Warwick introduces Sister Sledge, who performs "Frankie," and then chats with singer Boy George, recently returned from a world tour. George and Culture Club perform "Love is Love," after which Billy Ocean sings "Mystery Lady." Warwick briefly highlights music events from five years ago, including Diana Ross' #1 hit "Upside Down," and Rick Nelson and the Jordanaires perform "You Know What I Mean." Warwick performs Billy Joel's hit song "You're Only Human," after which comedian Arsenio Hall takes the stage and offers jokes about "Orientals" and their traits, including their "very peaceful and serene" parenting habits, contrasted with those of African-Americans. Tears for Fears performs "Head Over Heels" as the week's pick hit, and Warwick introduces a 1983 clip of Wham!'s performance of "Young Guns (Go For It)". Finally, Boy George joins Warwick on a duet of her iconic song "I Say A Little Prayer."

Throughout the program, the Solid Gold Dancers perform the top ten hits of the week, including Howard Jones' "Life in One Day" at #10, The Pointer Sisters' "Dare Me" at #9, Ocean's "Mystery Lady" at #8, Kool and the Gang's "Cherish" at #7, Madonna's "Dress You Up" at #6, Billy's Joel's "You're Only Human" at #5, Wham!'s "Freedom" at #4, Aretha Franklin's "Freeway of Love" at #3, John Parr's "St. Elmo's Fire" at #2, and Phil Collins' "Don't Lose My Number" at #1.
