MODERN FAMILY: BRINGING UP BABY {FOURTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The fourth season premiere in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, Manny honors Jay's 65th birthday with some old-fashioned "insult comedy" as Gloria frets about how to break the news of her unexpected pregnancy. Phil, Shorty and Miles arrive to "kidnap" Jay for a fishing trip, while elsewhere Cam and Mitch, still upset about the failed adoption plans, are taken aback when Lily is unfazed by the news that she will not be getting a baby brother after all. Haley, nursing a prom hangover, asks Claire to allow Dylan to crash at the Dunphy home for an indefinite period, and Manny, stunned by the pregnancy news, reminds his mother that Jay is averse to change. Lily takes advantage of her fathers' guilt to try to convince them to get a cat, and Cam is further frustrated when he is unable to donate their friends' oversized baby gifts. Jay repeatedly falls out of the boat as Miles and Shorty tell him all about his boring future as a senior citizen, and when Gloria tells Claire her secret, Claire worries that her tactless father will not handle the news with grace.
Luke warns Manny that a new baby will "replace" him as the kid of the household, and Cam and Mitch fail to convince a no-nonsense cat-adoption employee that they can give a kitten a good home. They confess that they are "not okay" about the loss of the baby after all, and they ponder taking a vacation to regroup after the disappointment. Dylan tries to guilt Claire into letting him stay, and Manny, worried about his new status in the family, attempts to kiss up to Jay. Jay misunderstands Claire's warnings about unexpected news and overreacts to Mitch and Cam's cat idea, and a frustrated Gloria ends up blurting out her news in front of the whole family. To everyone's surprise, however, Jay is thrilled by the idea of a "new beginning," having grown dejected by his friends' comments about aging. Several months later, cat owners Mitch and Cam have returned from a jaunt to London and Claire finally ousts Dylan from the Dunphy home, and Manny treats the family to a poem about Jay's future as an older dad. Includes commercials and promos.
