PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST 2013: PARENTHOOD {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 30th William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Saban Theatre in Los Angeles, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This PALEYFEST 2013 seminar honors "Parenthood," a comedy-drama series about the multigenerational Braverman family and their various experiences.
Host Betsy Scolnik (vice president, The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles) offers opening remarks before bringing moderator Michael Ausiello (editor-in-chief, TVLine.com) to the stage. Ausiello introduces executive producer Jason Katims, who sets up the episode "There's Something I Need to Tell You," which is screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 110595).
After the screening, Ausiello moderates the following panelists: Katims; and cast members Peter Krause (Adam Braverman), Lauren Graham (Sarah Braverman), Dax Shepard (Crosby Braverman), Craig T. Nelson (Zeek Braverman), Jason Ritter (Mark Cyr), Monica Potter (Kristina Braverman), Erika Christensen (Julia Braverman-Graham), Joy Bryant (Jasmine Trussell), Mae Whitman (Amber Holt), Max Burkholder (Max Braverman), Miles Heizer (Drew Holt), and Sam Jaeger (Joel Graham).
The panelists discuss topics which include: how Potter and Katims came up with the idea for the "Parenthood" subplot concerning her character's breast cancer; how the cast reacted to the cancer storyline; the unexpected developments introduced in the fourth season finale; Nelson and Whitman's thoughts on working with recurring cast member Matt Lauria (Ryan York); the level of "fun" the cast members enjoy while filming the show; Krause's experience in directing an episode involving teen pregnancy and abortion; the show's reputation for having its audience react emotionally; and the challenge of filming scenes that feature the entire cast.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: if the actors benefit from the lessons their characters have learned; the possibility that actors from the "Friday Night Lights" series, for which Katims also served as executive producer, will appear on "Parenthood"; the back story for the character of Max being autistic; fans' reactions to the ongoing adoption storyline; the "democratic" writing process for the show; and Katims' desire to do a storyline on the show involving homosexuality.
