GAME OF THRONES: CRIPPLES, BASTARDS, AND BROKEN THINGS (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic fantasy series, based on the book series by George R.R. Martin, about the warring royal families of Westeros. In this episode, Bran dreams of a three-eyed raven and then wakens to find that he has been summoned to the Throne Room, where he finds that a visiting Tyrion has designed a special saddle for him to ride on horseback despite his paralysis. As he leaves Winterfell, Tyrion observes that Cat is not at home and taunts Theon for being the Starks' "lackey," recalling his father Balon's defeat and Theon's subsequent capture. At Castle Black, Jon meets Samwell Tarly, a portly and shy new recruit who soon proves to be a poor swordsman and sadly states that he is a coward. Viserys is unimpressed by the Dothraki city, and Jorah warns Daenerys that the horselords will not cross the Narrow Sea to fight Robert. Viserys enjoys some private time with Daenerys' handmaiden Doreah, who tells him about her desire to see a real dragon. He informs her that they have all died out, though recalls seeing their skulls at King's Landing.
Sansa, still angry with Ned for killing Lady, frets that she may not give Joffrey the male heir he requires if they are, in fact, eventually married. Ned deals with reports of fights and chaos in the streets, though Baelish points out that the upcoming tournament is good for the town's businesses. Ned then questions Maester Pycelle and learns that Arryn asked for a certain "ponderous tome" on the lineages of the Seven Kingdoms right before his untimely death and inexplicably repeated "the seed is strong" as his final words. Pycelle denies that Arryn was murdered, though hints that Varys is the type to use poison. Ned finds Arya practicing her fighting techniques as taught to her by Syrio, though he reminds her that battles are not her future. On the Wall, Jon questions Sam about his decision to take the black when he is clearly ill-suited for the job, and Sam admits that he did so to escape his disapproving father's wrath. Baelish finds Ned and reveals that Arryn's squire, Hugh, was abruptly knighted right after Arryn's death, revealing that King's Landing has many spies and urging Ned to find one of his own. On Baelish's suggestion, Ned visits a certain blacksmith in town and meets his apprentice, Gendry, who reveals that Arryn questioned him about his long-dead, yellow-haired mother, and Ned realizes that Gendry is Robert's bastard son.
Jaime listens in disgust as Robert indulges himself with women, and he and Jory Cassel reminisce about their efforts in the Greyjoy Rebellion. Jon uses Ghost to remind the others that Sam is now their brother and should not be mocked, and Ser Alliser is angered when Grenn "yields" to Sam, clearly pretending on Jon's orders. Viserys attacks Daenerys for a perceived slight, but she finally fights back and furiously reminds him that she is a khaleesi and deserves his respect. Later, she admits to Jorah that while she wishes to reclaim the throne, she knows that Viserys cannot possibly lead Drogo's army to victory. Sam and Jon talk about the Night's Watch rule of celibacy, and Jon reveals that he too is a virgin because he is determined not to father a bastard like himself. Alliser then shares a grim story about a would-be battle against Mance Rayder's army that ended with his men desperately trapped in a blizzard north of the wall. At the joust tournament, Sansa watches in shock as Ser Hugh is "accidentally" killed by Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane, the Hound's even more fearsome brother. Baelish tells her the story of how Gregor callously burned his little brother's face as a child, warning her to keep the tale to herself. Cersei visits Ned and observes that he is "just a soldier," entirely loyal to Robert as his Hand. Tyrion arrives at a roadside inn and demands a room, paying a nearby man, Bronn, for his lodgings when he learns that there are no vacancies. He is surprised to spot Cat, particularly when she reveals that nearly everyone present is loyal to House Stark and then demands his capture for the attempt on Bran's life.
