GAME OF THRONES: BAELOR (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic fantasy series, based on the book series by George R.R. Martin, about the warring royal families of Westeros. In this episode, Varys visits Ned in his cell and reveals that Robb is marching south with an army. Ned maintains that Stannis is the rightful heir, but Varys urges him to confess his "treason" and live out his life on the Wall in order to protect his family. Robb camps outside the Twins, needing the Freys' assistance in crossing the river but unsure if they are still loyal to the Tullys. Cat meets with the cantankerous Walder Frey, whom she has known for many years, and requests safe passage, though Frey is disinterested in the rebellion and points out that he could easily betray them to the Lannisters. Lord Mormont presents Jon with a sword, Longclaw, originally meant for his son Jorah, in gratitude for Jon saving his life, adding that he has sent Alliser to King's Landing to warn King Joffrey about the wights. The brothers are impressed with the sword, though Sam regretfully tells Jon about Robb's actions and Jon laments that he should be by his true brother's side. Cat informs Robb that Frey has agreed to open the gates if Arya eventually marries one of his many sons and Robb himself one of his many daughters, and Robb is forced to accept.
Maester Aemon tells Jon that he must decide whether or not to abandon his vows and join Robb, and Jon is stunned when he reveals that he is actually a Targaryen and has long lived with his regret over not taking action when his family was wiped out during Robert's defeat of the Mad King. Tyrion is angered when Tywin orders him to lead his "savages" into battle, sure that is father is simply hoping for his death, and Bronn brings him a prostitute, Shae, to whom he takes an immediate liking. Drogo's injury worsens and he falls from his horse, and a desperate Daenerys summons Mirri Maz Duur, the witch. Jorah warns her that she and her unborn son will be killed when Drogo dies, as the new khal will not want a rival, and Daenerys convinces Mirri to save Drogo with a spell, ignoring her khalasar's warnings against blood magic. Mirri warns her that no one must enter the tent while she works and then slaughters Drogo's horse as payment, and Jorah kills Qotho when he tries to intervene. Daenerys then goes into labor, however, and Jorah is forced to take her back into the tent for Mirri's assistance.
On the night before battle, Tyrion plays a game of lies with Shae and Bronn and ends up divulging the story of his wife, Tysha, whom he impulsively married at sixteen. He then learned that she was a prostitute hired by Jaime, and was forced to watch as Tywin handed her over to his guards. In the morning, his men cheer the "Half-Man" as he urges them into battle, but he is quickly knocked out and misses the entire affair. Bronn later informs him that they won – because Robb sent only a small portion of his army to them while attacking Riverrun with the rest of his men. Robb captures Jaime and brings him to Cat, who demands the return of Ned and her daughters, though Jaime refuses and urges Robb to meet him in a single deciding combat. Robb instead has him thrown in prison, upset about the men killed by Tywin's forces. Arya, alone on the streets of King's Landing, is stunned to see her father hauled onto the steps of the sept, where he confesses that he plotted to murder Joffrey, the "true heir," and take the throne for himself. Pycelle then states that Ned should be shown mercy, but Joffrey smugly orders him killed, which shocks even Cersei. Guards restrain a frantic Sansa as Yoren shields Arya's eyes in the crowd, and Ser Ilyn beheads Ned with one stroke of Ice, his own sword.
