GAME OF THRONES: FIRE AND BLOOD {FIRST SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The first season finale in this dramatic fantasy series, based on the book series by George R.R. Martin, about the warring royal families of Westeros. In this episode, in the aftermath of Ned's execution, Yoren drags Arya off and cuts her hair short, telling her that she is going north. Bran and Rickon both have dreams of their father appearing in the family crypt, and although Osha tries to dissuade them, a letter soon arrives confirming Ned's death. Cat and Robb are devastated and vow to kill all of their enemies once Arya and Sansa are safe, while elsewhere Joffrey torments a singer who mocked Robert's demise and then forces Sansa to look at her father's head mounted on the wall, vowing that he will do the same to Robb. Sansa offers a scathing retort, though the Hound intervenes and urges her to save herself by going along with Joffrey's whims. At his camp, Robb argues that Renly does not have a rightful claim to the throne, and his men decide that they are finished serving the Baratheons and declare Robb himself to be "the king in the north." A captive Jaime taunts Cat about Ned's death and freely admits that he pushed Bran off the tower, though declines to explain why.
Tyrion observes that peace with Robb is now impossible thanks to Joffrey's rash actions, but Tywin, interested solely in rescuing Jaime, opts to retreat to Harrenhal and orders Tyrion to King's Landing to serve as Joffrey's Hand, though he commands him not to bring Shae along. Daenerys awakens to learn that her son died in childbirth and had a "monstrous" appearance, likely thanks to Mirri's spell. She finds that most of her khalasar has departed and that Drogo is catatonic, though Mirri, unapologetic about her trick, points out that he is technically alive, as requested. Jon decides to break his Night's Watch oath and ventures out to meet Robb, though his "brothers" soon find him and take him back to the Wall. Tyrion decides to defy Tywin and bring Shae to King's Landing after all, and Daenerys tearfully smothers Drogo, knowing that he will never again be restored to health. Maester Pycelle rambles to Ros about his experiences with many past kings, including the insane Aerys, then revealing that he is far less frail than he pretends to be. Baelish and Varys banter about their shared manipulative habits and ambitions, and Yoren instructs Arya to become "Arry the orphan boy" and places her in a group of unwanted boys, including Gendry, Robert's blacksmith bastard son. "Arry" stands up to one of them, revealing that she has killed before, and Gendry observes that Needle is a well-made sword as they begin their long journey to the Wall.
Mormont dismisses Jon's brief escape, saying that many Night's Watch members temporarily flee their posts and return. He then acknowledges that they are under threat from wildlings and strange walking corpses, declaring that they will head beyond the Wall to learn more of their enemy and recover the missing Benjen. Daenerys prepares for Drogo's funeral and announces to her remaining people that they shall all be equals if they choose to stay with her. She orders Mirri bound to the pyre and then enters the flames herself despite Jorah's pleas, and though Mirri is burnt alive, Daenerys is miraculously unaffected by the fire. In the morning, Jorah and the remaining bloodriders are shocked to see that she is unburnt – and that the eggs, long believed to have turned to stone, have hatched into three small dragons.
