BOARDWALK EMPIRE: 21 {SECOND SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The second season premiere in this historical drama series based on the nonfiction book by Nelson Johnson about the gangsters and bootleggers who rose to power in Atlantic City during the years of Prohibition. In this episode, Nucky's bootlegging business is going well with the help of Jimmy, Richard, Chalky and others, but Chalky's warehouse is suddenly attacked by Klansmen. Several of his workers are killed, though Chalky manages to shoot back. Nucky learns that Teddy was physically punished by a teacher at school, while elsewhere Angela struggles with Gillian's constant presence in her new home. Rose visits Atlantic City and Van Alden introduces her to his colleagues, who nervously assure her that the town has plenty of "wholesome entertainment." In Chicago, Al and Torrio meet with his eccentric lawyer George Remus, who urges him to sever ties with Nucky and to buy liquor from him instead. Elsewhere, Nucky and Bader make plans to buy some cheap New Jersey land and then re-sell it at a profit once it has been built up with roads, but Nucky then gets the news that Chalky has shot a Klansman. Rose is distressed to find that Atlantic City is not so wholesome after all, glad that they have not yet brought a child into "this world."

Nucky and Eli meet with a furious Chalky, who points out that the black community runs the city by working all of the service jobs and demands that something be done about the shooting. Margaret confronts Teddy's teacher, who informs her that the boy was caught playing with matches and coolly hints that she knows about Margaret's relationship with "Uncle" Nucky. Jimmy and Eli discuss the warehouse shooting, revealed to have been engineered by the Commodore to hurt Nucky through Chalky, and the Commodore tells Jimmy to "lay groundwork" for his coup. Nucky addresses the black community and vows to bring the killers to justice, though he then addresses the Klansmen and makes similar promises to them. Upon learning that another one of the shooters has died, Nucky orders Eli to arrest Chalky for his own safety. Nucky then attends the Klansman's funeral and is joined by Jimmy, who swears that he knows nothing about the deaths. They briefly discuss Jimmy's recent wedding to Angela and their new home, but Nucky then warns Jimmy that the Commodore is "duplicitous." Van Alden and Rose share an awkward anniversary dinner, but he then violently raids the restaurant when he learns that it is serving alcohol and she admits that she found his show of power to be "thrilling."

Nucky tells Margaret that Jimmy is hiding something, though she points out that Teddy too has need of a father figure. Nucky confronts the boy, but seeing that he expects to be beaten, merely scolds him lightly and then bribes him with cash to behave. Richard attends breakfast at the Darmodys' and, seeing their apparent domestic bliss, asks Jimmy how it feels "to have everything." Rose leaves town and Van Alden visits Lucy, now heavily pregnant with his child, revealing that he has been paying her off for months. Richard and Jimmy break into Chalky's warehouse and sell off the crates to Mickey Doyle, while elsewhere a lonely Richard pastes images of happy families into his scrapbook. Margaret and the children head off to the pictures to see "The Kid," but Nucky is summoned to his office and arrested for election fraud. Jimmy finally opens his wedding present from Nucky, upset when he sees that it is a statue of a father and son.
