BOARDWALK EMPIRE: UNDER GOD'S POWER SHE FLOURISHES (TV)
Summary
One in this historical drama series based on the nonfiction book by Nelson Johnson about the gangsters and bootleggers who rose to power in Atlantic City during the years of Prohibition. In this episode, in a flashback to Jimmy's Princeton days, Angela sneaks out of Jimmy's dorm in the early morning, trying to avoid detection by his nosy landlady. In the present, Fallon and Nucky discuss Randolph's evidence against him and are shocked when hotel employee Harlan reveals that he witnessed Van Alden, Randolph's primary witness, drowning Agent Sebso in the river. At home, Van Alden tells Sigrid about his unpleasant parents, who were even more obsessively religious than he, and she assures him that he is a "good man" and has nothing to fear from God. Emily tries out her new leg braces, and Father Brennan tells Margaret a parable about the importance of charity while hinting that the church still needs more assistance. At the Darmody home, Angela and Louise's bodies are removed as Gillian firmly tells the police that a random intruder is to blame. Richard, devastated by the deaths, finds himself unable to lie about Jimmy's whereabouts, and Gillian quickly covers by claiming that he is a "simpleton."
In the past, Jimmy studies "The White Devil" in class, and after another student is offended by his flippant comment about the war, the professor talks to Jimmy about his upbringing and his "guardian," Nucky, who is paying his tuition. Capone, Luciano and Lansky decide to sell off the absent Jimmy's liquor without him, flippantly telling Doyle to pay him out of his own share, though they are surprised to learn from him that Manny, not Jimmy, killed Angela,. Margaret tells Nucky about the priest's words, though he is dismissive of the idea of divine retribution. Wallbridge visits Eli in jail and urges him to pin the blame for Hans' death on Nucky, sure that he will receive the death penalty otherwise. Van Alden refuses to comment on Margaret when Randolph asks his opinion, and he finally signs Rose's divorce papers. Gillian visits Jimmy at Princeton and attends a mixer, where she meets a nervous Angela and flirts with Professor Pearson. Angela then reveals to Jimmy that she is pregnant, and he declares that they should marry and begin a life together, though she points out that he "hardly knows her." Nucky tells Margaret that Eli intends to testify against him and explains that he will temporarily sign his land over to her for safekeeping, though she seems disinterested.
At Princeton, Jimmy violently attacks Pearson for being too forward with Gillian, and Doyle tells Van Alden about Luciano, Lansky and Capone's plans for splitting the booze money and invites him to "intervene" with the Feds, offering to split the take fifty-fifty, but Van Alden refuses. After Jimmy admits that he is not sure if he loves Angela, he and Gillian share a drunken sexual encounter. In the morning, he finds her gone and, deeply ashamed, he drops out of school and joins the army, claiming to be an orphan. Owen and Margaret share a romantic moment as he assists her in repairing Emily's braces, and Gillian calls Jimmy, who has retreated into a heroin fog, and orders him to come home. Fallon and Randolph approach Van Alden with the deacon who witnessed Sebso's death, and Van Alden flees for his life. Margaret is subpoenaed and furiously tells Nucky that she is "being called to account," nearly revealing her affair with Owen, and he retorts that she will not "sacrifice" him to appease her conscience. Jimmy returns to Atlantic City and attacks Gillian when she casually states that Tommy will soon forget Angela, repeating that he himself will "remember," and the Commodore rushes to her rescue with his hunting spear. Jimmy stabs his father with his trench knife and, when Gillian tells him to "finish it," finally kills him. Jimmy collapses and dreams of Angela one final time, and awakens to find that Richard has neatly handled the murder scene. He hides his injury from Tommy, and Gillian, now calling herself the boy's "mama," assures Jimmy that they will never speak of what he has done.
