BOARDWALK EMPIRE: BROADWAY LIMITED (TV)
Summary
One in this historical drama series based on the nonfiction book by Nelson Johnson about the gangsters and bootleggers who rose to power in Atlantic City during the years of Prohibition. In this episode, the sole survivor from the woods massacre, Simon, is rushed into a hospital. Jimmy worries that the man can identify him, and Nucky tells Eli to make sure that the man dies. Nucky then meets with Chalky and they haggle over their shares, eventually agreeing on 65/35 in Nucky's favor. At home, Margaret talks with her friend Edith about her uncertain future, telling her daughter Emily that "the stork got lost," and then receives a message from Nucky saying that she has a job opportunity at a boardwalk boutique, Belle Femme. Eli "questions" Simon with a pillow over his face, but is interrupted by the arrival of Van Alden. Luciano undergoes a highly painful gonorrhea treatment, growing angry when the doctor questions him about his impotence. Lucy talks with Nucky about their relationship, expressing an interest in returning to the stage but offering to settle down if he wants children.
At the Darmody home, Jimmy looks at the studio portraits of Tommy and Angela, noting that hers seems especially flirtatious. Madame Jeunet, the owner of Belle Femme, is condescending to Margaret, annoyed that her previous shop girl was "jettisoned" on Nucky's orders, but gives her a nice dress to wear at work. Eddie Cantor performs for Nucky and his friends as Eli stops by with an update on Simon, while elsewhere Van Alden forcibly removes Simon from the hospital and heads for New York. On the boardwalk, Tommy runs into the photo shop and the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Dittrich, seem pleased to see him and question Jimmy politely about his time in France. On the road, Simon takes a turn for the worse, and Van Alden and Sebso barge into a local dentist's office and order the doctor to dose him with cocaine to wake him up. Simon curses at Van Alden in Yiddish and Van Alden torments the grievously wounded man to make him talk, and he finally gives up the name "Jimmy" before expiring. In New York, Rothstein successfully bluffs his way into large poker winnings, and then calmly asks Luciano to kill Jimmy for interfering with the liquor shipment. Nucky finds Gillian at the palmist's shop and she chides him for not protecting Jimmy as agreed, but he assures her that he is merely going through a "rough patch."
Doyle meets with the D'Alessio brothers and they demand repayment for their loan, though Doyle argues that he has no business now because of Nucky's involvement with Chalky. Lucy bullies Margaret as she tries on lingerie at Belle Femme, calling her Nucky's "charity case." Van Alden calls Elliot and tells him about Jimmy, but Elliot orders him not to arrest him yet and to go home to his wife, Rose. Nucky informs Jimmy that the Feds are now after him, and expresses his paternal disappointment in him before ordering him to leave Atlantic City for good. Jimmy refuses to explain matters to Angela and accuses her of having an affair with Dittrich, and she points out that she believed him dead for two years and that they barely knew each other before the war. Van Alden sits down to a near-silent meal with Rose, and Chalky is incensed to find one of his workers lynched at his distillery. Nucky covers up the death and asks Chalky not to seek revenge, as it is an election year, and Chalky demands a 50/50 split as recompense. Jimmy boards the Broadway Limited to Chicago and suffers dreams about the war, while Angela throws out their belated Christmas tree and Margaret watches over her sleeping children at home.
