GAME OF THRONES: THE POINTY END (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic fantasy series, based on the book series by George R.R. Martin, about the warring royal families of Westeros. In this episode, Lannister guards descend on Winterfell, interrupting Arya's "dancing lesson" with Syrio Forel. At her master's urging, Arya flees to safety, leaving Syrio to his uncertain fate. Sansa is frightened to encounter the Hound, and Arya unintentionally kills a stable boy with Needle as she tries to hide. Varys visits Ned in the dungeon, telling him that his men are dead, though his daughters are safe for now, and informs him that his blunder in telling Cersei of his discovery of her children's parentage has led directly to Robert's death. Learning that Catelyn has lost Tyrion, their sole bargaining chip, Ned begins to realize that he is doomed. At The Wall, two of Benjen's rangers are found dead but mysteriously undecayed, and Jon is distressed to learn of Ned's arrest for treason. Sansa pleads with Cersei not to end her engagement to Joffrey because of her father's apparent betrayal, and Cersei instructs her to write to Robb, telling him to come to King's Landing and accept Joffrey as his king. Robb is disgusted by the missive, which he knows to be Cersei's doing, and decides to round up his bannermen for an attack, admitting to Theon that he is scared by the prospect of war. At the Eyrie, Cat is outraged when Lysa, desperate to protect Robin, refuses to send her Knights of the Vale to help Robb's cause.

Bronn and Tyrion are caught by the Stone Crows, one of the fearsome hill tribes, but Tyrion manages to talk his way out of immediate danger by promising them a grand reward for escorting them to Tywin. Jon attacks Allister Thorne when he mocks Ned's predicament, and Jon is later attacked by one of the dead rangers, reawakened as a "wight," a monster destroyable only by fire. In Essos, Drogo's khalasar sacks a town for slaves and gold to fund the war, but Daenerys declares that all of the local women are under her protection. Mago, angry at being denied his "spoils of war," complains to Drogo about her actions, but Drogo sides with his wife and viciously kills Mago. He brushes off his seemingly mild injury, but Dany summons one of the women, a witch named Mirri Maz Dur, to treat the wound. In the North, Greatjon Umber is impressed by Robb's ruthless strength and agrees to fight for him, and Robb bids farewell to his little brothers, reminding them that "there must always be a Stark at Winterfell." Osha catches Bran praying at the heart tree and urges him to "hear" the gods' response, noting ominously that Robb is marching "the wrong way." The Night's Watch burn the two dead rangers, with Sam revealing that the wights' presence suggests the reawakening of the long-feared White Walkers. Cat joins Robb at the Riverlands and reads Sansa's letter, telling Robb that their entire family will surely die if his army does not defeat the Lannisters. Tyrion arrives at his father's camp with his new "friends" in tow and is stunned to learn that Ned is imprisoned and Joffrey now sits on the throne. Tywin learns of Robb's approach and offers to hire the Stone Crows for their assistance in battle, though the Stone Crows declare that they will keep Tyrion as collateral until they are paid in full.

In the North, Robb's men debate whether to attack Tywin or Jaime at Riverrun, aware that they must seek permission from Lord Walder Frey to cross at the Twins. When a Lannister spy is captured, Robb refuses to kill him and sends him back to Tywin with a threat, seemingly choosing to attack his army directly. At King's Landing, Ser Barristan is outraged when Cersei declares that Jaime is to replace him as the new Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, declaring that the position is to be vacated only by one's death. Sansa arrives and begs her fiancé to spare her father, swearing that he was tricked into denouncing Joffrey as the rightful king, and Joffrey agrees to show mercy – on the condition that Ned confess his crimes and bend the knee.
