PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: COMEDY NIRVANA! AN EVENING WITH MARON {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of seminars presented by The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles. This seminar honors "Maron," a comedy series about comedian Marc Maron, featuring a fictionalized version of his podcast interviewing comedy celebrities in his garage. Host Rene Reyes (director of programs, The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles) offers opening comments before bringing moderator Robert Lloyd (television critic, The Los Angeles Times). Lloyd moderates the following panelists: executive producer, creator, and cast member Maron (Marc Maron); executive producers and writers Michael Jamin and Sivert Glarum; executive producer Jim Serpico; and director Bobcat Goldthwait. The panelists touch on such topics as: how Maron and Serpico devised the initial concept for the show; the original version of the show's pilot, which included Ed Asner playing Maron's father; the problems revolving around filming the cats used on the show to portray Maron's pet cats; the process of translating Maron's real-life experiences into a half-hour sitcom script; how Judd Hirsch was cast in the role of Maron's father; Maron's experience years ago at a television audition and the level of "anger" he puts into his performances; Goldthwait's guest appearance on the show, playing himself; filming the show in Maron's home neighborhood; an episode featuring an appearance by actor Danny Trejo; and the large number of guest stars featured on "Maron." Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: the financing for Goldthwait's films; "Maron's" potential second season and the stories that may be featured on it; difficulties involving the show's tight shooting schedule; Maron's recent interview with former game show presenter Monty Hall; his recent controversial interviews with comedians Carlos Mencia and Gallagher; and Maron's published books, and the possibility of him writing another. Clips from "Maron" are interspersed throughout, including: a clip from the show's first episode involving Maron attempting to hit on a veterinarian; a scene wherein Maron is interviewing comedian Jeff Garlin on his podcast, only to be interrupted by the arrival of his father; a scene featuring Maron being interviewed by a teenage podcaster played by Harrison Boxley; and a clip of Maron alongside actress Aubrey Plaza, playing herself.
