PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST PREVIEWS 2013 FALL TV: FOX: BROOKLYN NINE-NINE {LA} {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 2013 Fall Preview PALEYFEST events in Los Angeles, also streaming live on the East Coast. This evening celebrates "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," the new comedy series about a squad of goofy Brooklyn cops and their work under their new no-nonsense captain. Host Rene Reyes (director of public programs and festivals, The Paley Center for Media/Los Angeles) offers opening remarks. The pilot episode is then screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 111873.)
After the episode, Debra Birnbaum (president and editor-in-chief, TV Guide magazine) moderates the following panelists: executive producers and writers Michael Schur, Daniel J. Goor and David Miner; and cast members Chelsea Peretti (Gina Linetti), Joe Lo Truglio (Detective Charles Boyle), Stephanie Beatriz (Detective Rosa Diaz), Terry Crews (Sergeant Terry Jeffords), Melissa Fumero (Detective Amy Santiago), Andy Samberg (Detective Jake Peralta), and Andre Braughter (Captain Ray Holt).
The panelists touch on such topics as: the "odd couple" pairing of Holt and Peralta; Schur's love of Braugher's famous "Homicide: Life on the Street" character of Frank Pembleton; Braugher's interest in taking a comedy role to "grow" as an actor; his appreciation of Schur's other comedy series, "Parks and Recreation"; the producers' text-message pitch to Samberg and his interest in playing a "comedy McNulty," referring to Dominic West's detective character on "The Wire"; inspiration from "Barney Miller" and the "petty disagreements" among the police characters; the writers' excitement at meeting "gigantic superhero" Crews and their surprise at his hidden artistic talents; Peretti's history as a writer on "The Office" alongside Schur; Braugher's difficulty in keeping a straight face during funny scenes; Santiago's determination to win her bet with Peralta "at all costs"; the flirtation and "natural chemistry" among the characters; Jeffords' fear of the job's dangers since becoming a father, reflected in Crews' real-life fears when playing for the NFL; the "very juvenile" relationship between Diaz and Boyle, hampered by Gina's terrible advice; plans to explore the detectives' personal lives in future episodes; Fred Armisen's cameo in the pilot and their hopes to feature more noteworthy comedians and "Saturday Night Live" alumni during "door duty" scenes; their use of "fun runs," or takes in which the actors can improvise; the actors' trips to a gun range to prepare for their roles; and Schur's memories of the first successful table run and Braugher's comic timing.
