CRAZY ONES, THE: PILOT (TV)

Summary

The pilot of this comedy series about a father and daughter trying to run an advertising agency together. Sydney Roberts of the advertising agency Lewis, Roberts, and Roberts is in dire straights since McDonald’s, the agency’s biggest client, is threatening to fire them. She seeks the assistance of her father Simon Roberts; Simon is renowned as a marketing genius but has struggled with failed marriages and alcoholism, and is attempting to make something of a comeback. Complicating matters is the representative for McDonald’s, Hannah Sharples, who has some sort of history with Simon. At the meeting where McDonald’s intends to fire the agency, Simon deviates from Sydney’s plan and proposes remaking a famous McDonald’s advertisement from the 1970’s with a modern star, emphasizing the “human connection” it embodies. Hannah agrees but gives them only one day to come up with something. Sydney and her staff struggle to accommodate Simon’s deviation from their plan, although Simon manages to secure a meeting with singer Kelly Clarkson. He and Zach try to convince her to lend her talents to their commercial, but she insists that she doesn’t sing jingles and would like to pick her own song. Furthermore, she wants to “re-brand” herself and expresses a desire to sing about sex. Despite these seemingly incompatible demands, Simon agrees and brings her into their recording studio, where she starts recording a highly sexually-charged song much to Sydney’s horror. Simon and Zach attempt to “pivot” Kelly into following their original plan, but Kelly catches on quickly and walks out on them. Simon begins to believe that despite his previous successes he will never be able to live up to what he once was and that it is time for him to retire. However, Sydney is struck with inspiration and confronts Kelly during her younger sister’s birthday party. She proposes that the “jingle” she is being asked to do is more about “promoting an idea” than selling food, likening it to a famous Apple commercial from 1987. She tries to convince Kelly that the idea they are promoting concerns family togetherness and values. After making Sydney sing the jingle in public, Kelly agrees to do it and records it for the agency. Simon is impressed by Sydney’s intuition and drive, and Sydney convinces Simon that he can still live up to his own legacy. Commercials deleted.
