Summary
The first in this comedy serious about a divorced gay father and his attempts to raise his teenage daughter.
In this episode, Sean tries to make lunch for his daughter Ellie, who has recently moved in with him after her mother moved away for a job. After some awkward conversation about Sean's pre-coming out marriage, his mother Lorna arrives to take Ellie to school, unimpressed with Sean's parenting efforts so far. Sean promises Ellie that he will make a special dinner for her that night to celebrate their first week together, and then heads off to his job at an Internet retail company. His friends Liz and Hunter complain bitterly about their new boss, Max, and Sean attempts to "save the day" by smoothing things over with him. Max, however, simply informs them all that they will be working late yet again, and Sean is distressed at the idea of canceling dinner with Ellie. He tries to explain, but Max "outwits" him by pointing out that he is a good worker and therefore cannot leave early.
Ellie arrives at the office and hints that she does not mind skipping dinner; Sean figures out that she has plans with her friends instead. At the end of the day, a desperate Sean escapes through the bathroom window with his friends' help and makes it home, where he cooks for a resentful Ellie and tries to broach the topic of her mother's departure. Max calls and summons him to a meeting at a hotel, having figured out that he left; a worried Sean calls his mother, who has a date later, to watch Ellie. Ellie follows Sean to the hotel, however, saying that she wants to back him up with Max. Sean refuses to apologize to his boss for leaving work, saying that spending time with Ellie is more important. When Max seems ready to fire Sean, Ellie changes his mind by declaring that her mother "abandoned" her and that she needs her dad as a result. Impressed, Sean leaves with Ellie for their dinner, and they steal Max's room service meal on the way out. Commercials deleted.
