ENLISTED: PILOT {TV}

Summary

The pilot of this comedy series about a trio of dysfunctional brothers, all soldiers assigned to an army support unit in Florida. Sergeant Pete Hill distinguishes himself on the front lines in Afghanistan, taking inspiration from his father, who served and perished during the Gulf War. After striking a superior officer for refusing to send reinforcements, Pete is reassigned to the Rear Detachment Unit, or “Rear D,” in Fort McGee, Florida. He expresses great disdain for his new position, as Rear D is a support unit who “aren’t real soldiers,” carrying out duties such as cleaning and maintaining army equipment and supporting the on-base families of deployed soldiers. His brothers Derrick and Randy are also assigned to Rear D and greet Pete after being separated for over a year. Derrick is sarcastic and disrespectful, while Randy is well-meaning but idiotic. Derrick in particular is somewhat bitter towards Pete, as he didn’t keep in contact with them while deployed overseas. Pete complains to the leader of Rear D, Command Sergeant Major Donald Cody, who served with Pete’s father. He tries to impress upon Pete the importance of Rear D, despite Pete complaining that his talents are wasted here and he should be redeployed. He bristles at his first assignment: to locate a missing dog belonging to one of the military families. Randy and Derrick show Pete around the base, and he meets Sergeant Jill Perez, the commanding officer of the other major unit in Rear D. She acts disparagingly towards Pete and tells him to stay out of her way. Pete is put in charge of his unit, which includes his brothers, largely consisting of unqualified and generally incompetent soldiers. Pete decides to ignore the assignment to locate the dog in favor of training for a war games exercise against a visiting unit from Italy. Pete also meets Wallace, a civilian contractor from Washington D.C., who coordinates projects on the base. Pete almost immediately dislikes Wallace, who is organizing the war games. The Hill brothers go out for a drink at a local bar that night, and Pete manages to drive both of them away. Jill sits near Pete and admits that she is bitter towards him since he was granted a position that she had to work hard to obtain. They share frustrations at their current assignment and their love for being soldiers. Pete continues to try to organize his unit, but they do not wish to listen to him. Derrick in particular is resigned to the fact that they are all “losers,” and soon their argument turns into a fistfight between the three Hill brothers, broken up by Cody. Cody berates them for their behavior and speaks to Pete in private, advising him to act more like his father. Pete feels guilty about not being in Afghanistan, but Cody convinces him that Rear D serves important functions, including notifying families when soldiers fall on the front line. He also advises Pete to let his unit know that he is one of them. Pete visits his brothers and talks to Derrick, revealing that he was deliberately distant from them while in Afghanistan to soften the blow should he not return. He also reveals that he kept pictures of the three of them with him at all times and would look at them if he thought he was going to die, as they were the last people he would want to see. Derrick is touched by this and his attitude towards Pete improves. The next day Pete apologizes to his unit for his behavior and tells them he is a “loser” just like them, but that they can be there for each other and become “brothers” to one another. This reinvigorates the unit, and they adopt “we are brothers” as their new motto. With their newfound confidence they use a tank to gain an edge in the war games against the Italians, taking them completely by surprise. However, Pete voluntarily forfeits the war games when he spots the missing dog amongst the Italian encampment and goes to retrieve it. Wallace mocks Pete and his unit before one of Pete’s privates butts him in the stomach with her rifle. Pete returns the dog to his family and they express their appreciation; the brothers feel good about what they’ve done and Cody congratulates them. Cody even allows Pete’s unit to take the tank out for a joyride before returning it. Commercials deleted.
