WHATEVER THIS IS: GHOST CHEATERS
Summary
One in this web series about a pair of production assistants and a teacher living in New York City, each trying their best to make a living. Sam and Lisa make an awkward attempt to have sex before Sam has to leave for work with Ari. Ari, Sam, Toby, and Dana are working on a ghost hunter-type show called “Ghost Cheaters,” and Ari tries to meditate to compensate for his lack of sleep. Ari talks to Toby about how he and Sam plan to work extra jobs to help them get up to date on their rent situation, requiring that they stay awake for several days straight. Toby tells Ari that he’s planning to attend a birthday party for his friend at a gay bar downtown. Lisa gets a call from her father, who expresses his concern that Sam isn’t properly providing for her, but Lisa insists that they have a “plan” together. She keeps telling her father not to worry, not informing him of her various problems such as the impending rent collection. Ari runs himself ragged trying to do many jobs at once and drinks copious amounts of coffee to stay awake, rendering him jittery and agitated. He and Sam try to get their work done so they can go to their friend’s baby shower. Ari, Sam, and Lisa arrive at the baby shower despite Sam’s increasing fatigue from spending a day and a half straight awake. During the party Lisa is forced to admit that she didn’t bring a gift to the shower, much to the disapproval of the other guests. Sam and Ari make rude comments about them in retaliation. Shannon, the baby’s mother, forgives Lisa, who stays afterward to help clean up. That night Ari works a job as a bartender, where a patron informs him that someone was shot outside of a bar in the village that night. Sam and Ari continue their struggle to stay awake, as their last job on “Ghost Cheaters” is coming up. However, “Ghost Cheaters” proves to be a grueling task for them, and Dana is fading as well. Ari comes to suspect that Toby may have been the victim of the shooting he heard about during his bartending job. Ari asks Oscar about Toby, but he hasn’t seen him either. However, Ari finds Toby napping in the back of the production truck, and talks to him in private, saying that he was worried about him. Toby notes that he was in the close vicinity of the shooting, and it rattled him. He notes that his various jobs all involve some sort of “compromise,” and he questions the line of work he’s chosen. Ari comforts Toby and they kiss. Lisa returns home to find Ari and Toby in Ari’s bedroom. She goes to Sam’s room and climbs into bed with him while he’s dead asleep.
