Summary
This program presents a portion of coverage of the 2002 XIX Olympic Winter Games from Salt Lake City. Highlights of this portion include coverage of the following events and topics: Anchor sports commentator Bob Costas presides throughout this portion and introduces various events and highlights: Donny and Marie Osmond perform at the Closing Ceremony. Mitt Romney, president and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, provides a closing statement. Dr. Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Organizing Committee provides closing comments of his own. Rogge bestows the gold Olympic Order upon Romney and Fraser Bullock, COO and executive vice president of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee. This award signifies recognition of efforts worthy of merit in the cause of sport. Musician Willie Nelson performs a version of the song "Bridge Over Troubled Water." The Olympic flag is lowered and departs the stadium as the Olympic Hymn is sung by Laura Garff-Lewis of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Utah Opera. Children of Light perform their farewell and thanks to the athletes. Aerialists perform suspended from hot air balloons at 100 feet in the air representing the various sports in competition. The “Children of Light” choir perform "Happy Trails" to the athletes. Marcella de Travato, the Italian Child of Light, accepts the light as a symbolic transfer of the games to Turin, Italy. Singers Charlotte Church and Josh Grobin perform the prayer as the Olympic flame is extinguished. Ice dancers Renee Roca and Gorsha Sur perform during the prayer. Singer Christina Aguilera performs the song "Infatuation." Musician Moby performs, and athletes are invited onto field. Bon Jovi performs the song "It's My Life." Costas provides an overview of upcoming events during the closing ceremony. Sports commentator Jim McKay and Costas express their personal feelings about the 2002 Olympic Games.
