PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: THE WAIT IS OVER! CASTLE IS BACK @ THE PALEY CENTER {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented at The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles. This evening honors "Castle," the comedy-drama series about a New York Police Department detective who grudgingly lets a rugged mystery-books author help solve murder cases. The evening opens with a screening of the episode "Need To Know," which is shown in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 112391.)
After the screening, Rene Reyes (director of public programs and festivals, The Paley Center for Media/Los Angeles) offers opening remarks and welcomes moderator Rachel Smith (former Miss USA and television host, "On the Red Carpet") to the stage.
Smith moderates the following panelists: executive producer and creator Andrew Marlowe; executive producers David Amann and Rob Bowman; and cast members Nathan Fillion (Richard Castle), Stana Katic (Kate Beckett), Penny Johnson Jerald (Captain Victoria Gates), Susan Sullivan (Martha Rodgers), Jon Huertas (Javier Esposito), Seamus Dever (Kevin Ryan), and Molly Quinn (Alexis Castle).
The panelists touch on such topics as: the show's recent 100th episode; the recent boost in ratings in the sixth season; Katic's reaction to Castle and Beckett's engagement; the surprise order of a 24th episode in the fifth season, leading to the clip show "Still"; guesses about the characters' activities in the two months between the fifth and sixth seasons; the shift from a "will they or won't they" dynamic to a "how will they"; Jerald's views of the strong chemistry between characters, including guest stars; the depiction of Beckett's FBI job and Rachel McCord (Lisa Edelstein) as a "mentor figure"; Katic's opinions on Beckett's desire to "prove herself"; Quinn's view of Alexis as a "caregiver" and her relationship with the free-spirited Pi (Myko Olivier); an unscripted kiss in front of her TV dad in the prom episode; the undefined relationship between Esposito and M.E. Lanie Parish (Tamala Jones); Katic's short haircut compared with Beckett's signature long tresses; Ryan as an expectant father; Sullivan's interest in the return of Jackson Hunt (James Brolin) as Martha's love interest; the producers' experiences with fan feedback; the actors' ideas for future episodes, including a mystery dinner-turned-real murder; suggestions for a morgue-centric episode or a musical; the switch to shooting in high-definition, which lacks the "masking" quality of film; and their attempts to keep the same "poetic" look of the show despite the changes in technology.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: Fillion's appreciation for the crew; the actors' favorite episodes directed by Bowman and Jerald's past work with him on the series "Parker Lewis Can't Lose"; Marlowe and Bowman's shared love of movies and their shorthand on set; the process of pitching the series to ABC around the time of the 2007 writers' strike; Katic's choice of a Castle/Beckett wedding song; her impressions of various other cast members; Huertas' ideas about Beckett and Esposito's history together as newbie uniformed cops; and panelists' one-word descriptions of season six.
