MODERN FAMILY: SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER {FIFTH SEASON PREMIERE} {PART 1 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
The fifth season premiere in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In the first half of this two-part episode, Gloria panics as Manny prepares for a long trip to Colombia, and Mitch and Cam are thrilled when gay marriage is finally legalized in California. Gloria urges Cam to propose to Mitch in a romantic fashion, unlike Jay's matter-of-fact request for her hand, and Claire feverishly rearranges her kids' summer schedules to allow for one "kid-free" week with Phil. Cam makes reservations at a romantic restaurant and quickly avoids meeting Mitchell at a café, believing that Mitch has planned a proposal of his own. Manny and Jay head for the courthouse to retrieve Manny's birth certificate for the trip, leading to a misunderstanding with the many people lined up for marriage licenses, and Mitch is shocked at Claire's strangely dark suggestions for a "romantic" proposal.
Phil tries to manipulate Alex into changing her Habitat for Humanity assignment, though Luke balks at altering his summer-camp schedule, wanting to attend at the same time as his crush, Carly. Gloria bids Manny an agonized farewell at the airport, and Haley figures out her parents' scheme and tries to bargain with Phil, though he scares her into downgrading her demands by threatening her with an Alex-like future. Claire, Phil, Jay and Gloria are all roped into helping Mitch and Cam with their respective proposal plans, and Gloria is stunned to learn that Jay actually did plan a romantic proposal for her, which was foiled by an overeager Manny. Claire secretly asks Frank to invite Phil to Florida for a few days, wanting some time solely to herself, but she is wracked with guilt when Phil talks fondly about their own engagement and reveals his highly romantic nature. She confesses her trick, apologizing for her "cold" nature – but then finds that he has done precisely the same thing with DeDe. Mitch and Cam, stranded with a flat tire, begin reminiscing about their years together, and they finally share a perfect mutual proposal by the side of the road. Later, Jay finds himself unexpectedly emotional at a note left behind by Manny, much to Gloria's confusion. Includes commercials and promos.
