PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST 2014: HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER FAREWELL {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media’s 31st William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television’s creative community. This PALEYFEST 2014 seminar honors “How I Met Your Mother,” a comedy series set in 2030 about a man telling his children how he met their mother back in the year 2005, when he was 27.
Maureen Reidy (chief marketing officer, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks before introducing the evening’s moderator, comedian Wayne Brady (who played James Stinson in a recurring role on the show). Brady introduces a reel of clips from throughout the show’s duration, followed by the episode “Gary Blauman,” which is screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 114222).
Brady moderates the following panelists: executive producer and director Pamela Fryman; executive producers and creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays; and cast members Neil Patrick Harris (Barney Stinson) via Skype, Alyson Hannigan (Lily Aldrin), Josh Radnor (Ted Mosby), Cobie Smulders (Robin Scherbatsky), and Cristin Milioti (The Mother).
The panelists touch on such topics as: the show’s highly anticipated series finale; the structure of the final season; the cast’s emotional state during their final days of shooting; Milioti’s feelings on playing the eponymous mother, appearing in the final season after eight seasons of buildup; the role that music played in the show’s creative process; the sense of camaraderie among the cast and producers; the panelists’ favorite moments from the show; how the characters have impacted the cast members' lives; and future projects for the actors.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: how Smulders’ Canadian heritage influenced her character; the cast’s favorite running gags over the show's duration; the inclusion of the cast members’ spouses as minor characters on the show; and the actors' advice for aspiring actors.
