Summary
One in this series of seminars presented by The Paley Center for Media in New York. This seminar honors “Psych,” a comedy/mystery series about a man whose acute observational skills convince others that he has psychic powers, allowing him to run a "psychic detective agency" in Santa Barbara with his best friend from childhood.
Ron Simon (television curator, The Paley Center for Media in New York) introduces Chris McCumber (president, USA Network), who offers opening remarks. He then introduces co-executive producer Andy Berman, joining via Skype, who sets up the episode “A Nightmare on State Street,” which is screened in its entirety. Actress Ally Sheedy (Mr. Yang, a recurring character on the series) moderates the following panelists: cast members James Roday (Shawn Spencer) and Dule Hill (Burton “Gus” Guster).
The guests touch on such topics as: their favorite “psych-outs,” a running gag on the series; story ideas they were unable to properly develop; fan interaction events, such as the "Psych Appreciation Day” in New York; the actors' involvement with the Make a Wish Foundation; notable guest stars, including William Shatner and Tim Curry; the cast’s participation in social media; future projects for Roday and Hill; elements which made “Psych” special to cast and crew; and how the actors hope the show will be remembered.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: sought-after cameo appearances that never came to fruition; favorite catchphrases from the scripts; Hill's delight in dressing up like Michael Jackson in one episode and moonwalking under the direction of John "Thriller" Landis; the challenge of filming the show’s special musical episode; laughs and tears resulting from the series finale; the making of the show’s many horror-themed episodes; first impressions of the show’s concept; possible future plans for “Psych”; and and Roday's memories of working on the NC-17-rated 1999 film "Coming Soon.”
