TREME: PROMISED LAND (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic series about a group of New Orleans residents and their attempts to rebuild their lives in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. In this episode, as Mardi Gras approaches, Toni tracks down the friendly Judge Gatling at a restaurant, telling him that the police department intends to throw out important files, and Colson muses that there is a difference between "vice and sin" as he watches the Carnival festivities. Janette seeks advice from famed chef Emeril Lagasse about handling the "dog and pony show" aspects of her rising fame as a chef, and in D.C., Hidalgo talks to Townsend about his hopes for the St. Bernard project and Townsend invites him to D.C.'s upscale version of Mardi Gras. Elsewhere, Annie is excited to stay in a fancy hotel suite for the duration of the event, while back in New Orleans Davina and Delmond run into a friend, Kimberly, who happily reveals that her personal footage from the storm has been turned into an award-winning documentary, "Trouble the Water." Davis records his tribute album and reacts with outrage when Mimi stages an "intervention" and tells him that he himself should not sing the numbers.
Albert works diligently on his Mardi Gras suit as Toni watches a band playing outside a coffee shop, and upon realizing that one of the musicians is her daughter's boyfriend, she sits him down for a talk about their age-inappropriate relationship. Scottie, however, reveals that Sofia has already broken up with him. L.P. drives through the parade-crowded city and arrives at the Glovers' again, where he tells them that he has found a pathologist to confirm that Henry's death was a homicide. The family is unimpressed, having already assumed as much, but L.P. eagerly states that he can now publish his article. Antoine coaches his students in the parade and has a meaningful chat with one girl about her aspirations and his own, and Davis seeks advice on his "opera" from several prominent musicians, including Cosimo Matassa. Delmond, Albert and several others watch "Trouble the Water" as they work on their parade suits and are disturbed by the grim footage, and Hidalgo and Cindy enjoy the D.C. Mardi Gras ball as Annie performs "Promised Land" and "Louisiana 1927" onstage. Tran advises Sonny, who is two weeks sober, to avoid the temptation of Mardi Gras, indicating that he is welcome to return to work and to the family after the holiday. Janette appears on television with Al Roker and nervously attempts to cook crawfish étouffée live on air, and Annie heads home to New Orleans for the weekend, promising Frey that she will return in time of the rest of the gigs.
L.P. attends a musical performance with Sofia and admits that he told Toni about Scottie, and LaDonna compliments Albert's elaborate handmade costume as he finally leads the Guardians of the Flame in a joyful celebration. Annie meets up with Lucinda and helps her to scatter Harley's ashes in the river, and she quickly returns to D.C. without seeing Davis. Sonny heeds Tran's advice and attends an N.A. meeting, and Davis teases Janette about her TV appearance before they run into Derek, her talented waiter-turned-actor friend. Antoine catches up with his friends at the end of their walk, and Davis and Janette end up in bed together, agreeing that the tryst "doesn't count" because of the holiday. Colson and Nikolich arrive at a crime scene involving further police brutality and witness intimidation, and Colson angrily declares that "something is coming" and warns his partner to stay clean. L.P. attends another show and greatly enjoys his first-ever Mardi Gras, though Sonny quietly arrives early for work in the morning after the festivities.
