GAME OF THRONES: AND NOW HIS WATCH IS ENDED (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic fantasy series, based on the book series by George R.R. Martin, about the warring royal families of Westeros.

In this episode, Brienne watches uncomfortably as Locke and his men mock a desolate Jaime, forced to wear his severed hand around his neck, as they head toward Robb's camp. Jaime tries to defend himself with a sword, but finds that he cannot fight left-handed. Tyrion asks Varys for proof that Cersei ordered his death during the Blackwater battle, but Varys instead tells him of the importance of revenge, revealing that he has captured the sorcerer who ritualistically castrated him many years ago. At Craster's Keep, the Night's Watch men complain that Craster is starving them and will surely hand them over to the White Walkers. Sam tends to Gilly and her still-unnamed baby. In a dream, Jojen advises Bran to retrieve the three-eyed raven from a tree, though Cat also appears and begs him not to climb. Varys talks with Ros, now his spy, who hints that Baelish intends to take Sansa along with him to the Eyrie, where he plans to marry Cat's sister, the widowed Lysa Arryn. Cersei and Olenna discuss the challenges of raising warmongering sons as Joffrey shows Margaery around the Great Sept, including its many tombs. Margaery urges Joffrey to greet his people, who "adore" him, watched by a wary Cersei.

Theon's mysterious rescuer takes him to Deepwood Motte, the castle recently captured by Yara; Theon wonders if Balon knew of his son's capture and torture. He voices his regret about sacking Winterfell and killing the two orphan boys in place of Bran and Rickon, sadly admitting that Ned was his "real father." He is then horrified, however, to realize that the boy has led him straight back into the dungeon and faked the "escape" as a cruel game. Brienne roughly urges Jaime to rouse himself and survive, surprised that he lied about Tarth's "sapphires" in order to save her. Cersei questions Tywin about his plans to save Jaime and then points out that she is more capable and worthy than either of her brothers, to which Tywin reacts skeptically. She states that the Tyrells are "a problem" and that Margaery is manipulating Joffrey, though Tywin counters that the sadistic young king needs a firm hand. Olenna strolls in the garden with Varys and discusses Baelish's plans for Sansa, noting that she is "the key to the North" if Robb dies and guessing that he intends to wed her instead of Lysa. Sansa is thrilled when Margaery befriends her and suggests that she should marry the handsome Loras and live in Highgarden, far from the Lannisters.

Bannen, a Night's Watchman, dies due to Craster's cruel treatment, and Karl Tanner confronts Craster and demands better food. Karl kills him when he fights back, ignoring Mormont's warnings about the gods' wrath against a guest who murders his host; a full-scale mutiny breaks out as Rast fatally stabs Mormont and Sam flees with Gilly. Thoros brings Arya, Gendry and the Hound to the Brotherhood Without Banners' hideout, and the Hound recognizes their leader as Beric Dondarrion. Beric, now a follower of the Lord of Light, accuses the Hound of killing innocents on the Lannisters' orders. Though the Hound denies responsibility for his brother's many crimes, Arya again cites his murder of Mycah. Beric announces that he will fight him in a trial by combat. Daenerys completes her purchase of the Unsullied and then reveals to a shocked Kraznys that she speaks fluent Valyrian and has understood his insults all along. She orders the Unsullied to free all of the slaves and kill all of the masters and commands Drogon to roast Kraznys alive. She easily sacks all of Astapor with the help of her dragons and her 8,000 loyal new soldiers. Afterward, she announces to the Unsullied that they are no longer slaves and invites them to fight for her as free men. They immediately follow her out of the city.
