PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: THE GOLDBERGS: YOUR TV TRIP TO THE 1980S {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented at The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles. This evening honors "The Goldbergs," the comedy series about a dysfunctional Pennsylvania family in the 1980s.
Host Rene Reyes (director of public programs and festivals, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening comments and welcomes moderator and consulting producer Lew Schneider to the stage. Schneider introduces the episode "A Wrester Named Goldberg," which is then screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 114240.)
After the screening, Schneider moderates the following panelists: executive producer and creator Adam F. Goldberg; executive producer Doug Robinson; and cast members George Segal (Albert "Pops" Solomon), Jeff Garlin (Murray Goldberg), Wendy McLendon-Covey (Beverly Goldberg), Troy Gentile (Barry Goldberg), and Hayley Orrantia (Erica Goldberg).
The panelists touch on such topics as: how a show based on Goldberg's many hours of home movies came into being; Goldberg's decision to change his older brother Eric to a sister on the show; the close accuracy of Barry's character to his real sibling; the "heartfelt" moment in the show's pitch that won over the network; the challenge for Goldberg in casting actors to play his family members; the "immediate" choice of Gentile despite the network's request for alternatives; Garlin's interest in the series while working on "Curb Your Enthusiasm"; the use of 1980s trends and events as more than jokes; Goldberg's impressive "Star Wars" Tauntaun costume, as seen on the show; McLendon-Covey's nervousness about meeting her real-life counterpart; Beverly's notable fashion sense and the use of the real Mrs. Goldberg's clothes; Garlin's experience working with characters similar to his own family members; Segal and Schneider's on-set banter and disagreements; Garlin's love for "consummate professional" Segal; Gentile's struggles in learning to roller-skate for an episode; Orrantia's experience in her very first acting role; and the talents of young co-star Sean Giambrone (Adam Goldberg), currently attending middle school while also filming the show.
Questions from the audience lead to a discussion of the following topics, among others: viewers' frequent comments that the characters are like their relatives; the non-chronological use of '80s events, chiefly based on Goldberg's memories rather than facts; announcement of the show's pick-up for a second season; the show's setting in Abington, Pennsylvania and use of specific town details; future explorations of the family's Jewish identity; Gentile and Orrantia's education on '80s culture, not having lived through it; the important use of classic '80s music, including Goldberg's determination to include "Africa" by Toto; whether Goldberg's views his real mother as "overbearing"; and whether a DVD set will feature commentary from the real Goldbergs.
