GREY'S ANATOMY: PERFECT STORM {NINTH SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The ninth season finale in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, as the powerful thunderstorm arrives, Cristina is shocked by Owen's admission that he has considered adopting young patient Ethan, while elsewhere Bailey, tasked with operating on a man who fell from a roof in the high winds, worries that her obsessive-compulsive disorder will overcome her again. Derek and Cristina tend to Meredith, who is in active labor, and Arizona, consumed with guilt over her dalliance with Lauren, reminds her interns to keep the parents of the "tiny humans" calm – but the power suddenly goes out and the generator fails to kick in, leaving the struggling babies in serious danger. Dr. Ryan firmly explains that Meredith will need a Cesarean to give birth to her son, and when Webber summons Cristina to operate on the roof patient, she is alarmed at the prospect of performing surgery in the darkness.
A bus crashes right outside of the ER, and Meredith gives birth to her son, who is then whisked away for treatment. Arizona confesses her affair to Alex, who in turn admits that he is in love with Jo but is scared of "damaging" her as he did Izzie, Ava and Lexie, and Ryan leaves Ross to finish Meredith's simple operation. Webber urges a worried Cristina to "listen for it" and use her instincts to mend the patient's heart, and Arizona is flustered when Lauren offers to help treat the infants. The doctors rush to save the bus-crash victims, sending Bailey into even further panic, and Meredith realizes that her spleen is seriously damaged from her earlier fall and orders a terrified Ross and Brooks to continue operating on her, telling them not to leave her in a vegetative state if she bleeds out. Derek steps in and calms the frightened peds parents, explaining that they must help "bag" the infants by hand, and Cristina thanks Webber for his wise lesson as Bailey, learning of Meredith's dire condition, realizes that she must master her anxieties enough to step in and take over from the interns.
April is horrified when the bus explodes with Jackson seemingly still inside, but he emerges unscathed, having narrowly rescued a young girl. Webber finds repairman Frank unconscious by the damaged generator, and Cristina and Derek observe his newborn son as she reminds him that "their person" is very much a survivor. Bailey successfully performs her splenectomy, and the power comes back on just in time for Callie to realize Arizona's "mistake" with Lauren. Alex declares his love to Jo, and a distressed April admits to Jackson that she will not marry Matthew if he "gives her a reason not to." Cristina tells Owen about her sense of "pure joy" in the OR and sadly guesses that he will never be truly happy without a child, and Callie and Arizona have a dramatic fight in which Callie realizes that Arizona is still resentful about her life-saving leg amputation, with Arizona furiously declaring that Callie "didn't lose anything" in the fatal plane crash. Meredith decides to name her son "Bailey," while elsewhere the other Bailey desperately searches for Webber, wanting to make amends for her hurtful words – unaware that he is in the basement, having been electrocuted by the generator.
