BOARDWALK EMPIRE: MARGATE SANDS {THIRD SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

The third season finale in this historical drama series based on the nonfiction book by Nelson Johnson about the gangsters and bootleggers who rose to power in Atlantic City during the years of Prohibition. In this episode, Mayor Bader is dogged by questions from reporters about the ongoing rash of violence between the warring gangsters and is frustrated by repeated suggestions that he does not truly run the city. Nucky, still holed up at the lumber yard, receives a call from Doyle in Pennsylvania asking about the currently-unused Overholt distillery, while at the same time tensions flare between Al's and Chalky's men. Rosetti remains at the Artemis Club and argues with Masseria, who is angry that Rosetti has gotten so many of his men killed without actually bringing down Nucky or Rothstein. Gillian attempts to placate Tommy, who is hiding in his room, and Nucky and Eli share a rare brotherly moment as they reflect on their lives and current situation. Nucky is sure that things are "over" in Atlantic City for them both, but Eli assures him that he will soon regain power. Doyle calls an exasperated Rothstein and tells him about Overholt, and Luciano receives rough treatment from Moceri and Caiozzo in jail but refuses to talk.

Gillian tries to convince Gyp to allow her to leave the house with Tommy, but he refuses and declares that he intends to run the city with her by his side and, seeing his clear interest in her, she switches tacks and begins to seduce him. Rothstein calls Nucky and offers to arrange for Masseria to abandon Rosetti in exchange for "99%" of the Overholt distillery, and Nucky quickly agrees. Margaret meets with a kindly doctor and his wife in Brooklyn and asks for assistance in aborting Owen's child, admitting that she is "completely lost." Luciano assures Lansky that he has found "an angle" that will keep him out of jail, though Lansky is furious at the loss of the heroin and the money. They are both then stunned to find that they have been set up by their former mentors and that Moceri and Caiozzo are Rothstein's "associates," and Luciano flies into a rage at the betrayal. Rothstein then invites Masseria to join him in the heroin business in exchange for pulling his men from Rosetti's side, and back in New Jersey, Nucky breaks up another squabble by announcing that Rosetti has lost most of his support.

Gillian joins Gyp in the bedroom and plays along with his violent sexual predilections, but he stops her before she can incapacitate him with a large dose of heroin, as she did Roger, and injects her instead. He is then shocked to find his men departing the house and flees for his life when Richard storms the club with his many weapons, single-handedly executing most of Rosetti's men and rescuing a grateful Tommy. Chalky and Al mow down Masseria's men as they leave town and Al heads back to Chicago, and Nucky and Eli arrive at the Artemis Club to find the aftermath of Richard's attack as well as a heavily drugged Gillian, who seems to be remembering her first assault by the Commodore. A bloodied Richard arrives at the Sagorskys' with Tommy and leaves him there before departing, clearly disturbed by his own return to violence. Andrew Mellon calls Randolph and tells her about Overholt, revealing that Nucky betrayed Rothstein by informing to Gaston Means. An increasingly deranged Rosetti makes it to the beach and rants about Nucky, but declares that he will head west and "start over." Tonino, however, fatally stabs him on Nucky's orders, and Nucky tells him that he considers his dispute with Masseria to be finished. Nucky then finds Margaret in Brooklyn and states that he forgives her affair and wants her to come home, believing that she is trying to "make some point" in leaving him. She refuses him, however, and he returns to Atlantic City and walks the boardwalk alone, no longer the glad-handing local celebrity he once was.
