LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN {NATALIE PORTMAN, AL FRANKEN} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by David Letterman. This program features actress Natalie Portman and comedian Al Franken.
In his opening monologue, Letterman touches upon the following topics: the unusually mild weather; new television ads for Viagra; pop star Britney Spears' second pregnancy; the upcoming March Madness basketball tournament; President George W. Bush's Assistant for Domestic Policy Claude Allen's fraud charges; and the resignation of Michael Jackson's attorneys and the sale of his Neverland ranch.
Next, after a man claims to have seen the face of Jesus Christ in a plate of manicotti, Letterman introduces the segment "Who's in the Manicotti?", in which a randomly selected visitor, Adrien from Texas, tries to identify the celebrity face in a pasta dish from the neighboring Hello Deli restaurant; she fails to correctly identify Burt Reynolds. At the same time, fourth-grade teacher Ben painstakingly sets up a huge dominoes display, though the attempt ends in disaster.
After an installment of "George W. Bush: What?!" and the "Top Ten Signs the Government is Running Out of Money," Letterman welcomes Portman, who discusses the following topics: her first appearance on the show at age thirteen; her recent six-month stay in her birth country of Israel; the bizarre sights of Manhattan, including the famed "Naked Cowboy"; her brief foray into the world of ice hockey; her early days as a member of the World Patrol Kids, an environmental preservation-themed kids' band; and her new role in the political action thriller "V For Vendetta" (2006), for which her head was shaved onscreen. A clip from "Vendetta" is shown.
Next, Franken takes the stage and discusses Letterman's masterful handling of right-wing personality Bill O'Reilly; his trip to the Middle East to perform comedy shows, including at the famed Abu Ghraib prison; meeting the soldier who formerly guarded the "surprisingly personable" Saddam Hussein; Bush's low approval rating; Vice-President Dick Cheney's infamous accidental shooting of friend Harry Whittington during a hunting trip; his radio show and move back to Minneapolis; his potential Senate run and advice from former Vice-President Walter Mondale; and the inexplicable election of former pro-wrestler Jesse Ventura as governor of Minnesota. Includes commercials and promos.
