PUSHING DAISIES: BAD HABITS (TV)
Summary
One in this fantasy-based dramedy series about a pie-maker whose touch can revive the dead.
In this episode, in the past, young Olive goes to remarkable lengths to secure her heart's desire, a horse. In the present, still holed up at the convent as a result of her emotional toil at the Pie Hole, Olive befriends a truffle-hunting pig, "Pigby," and a kindly nun, Sister Larue – who then falls to her death from the bell tower. Elsewhere, Ned is discomfited to learn that Chuck has hired a genealogy expert to help her fill in her family tree, and Olive frantically seeks out Emerson to help her prove that Larue did not take her own life. Emerson, highly amused by Olive's new identity, goes undercover with Ned and Chuck to question Mother Superior and Father Eduardo Dedonde – and Larue herself, though Ned is unsure about the moral implications of reawakening a nun. Larue angrily confirms that she was pushed by someone after her "diamonds," and Chuck learns that Larue was a renowned mycologist before taking the veil.
Olive soon discovers a secret stash full of contraband items in the convent and guesses that Mother Superior killed Larue because of her black-market dealings, and Chuck, a.k.a. "Sister Christian," confesses her cosmic doubts to Mother Superior. Ned and Emerson then find a secret door leading into the kitchen of noted Swedish chef Hansel Von Getz, who confirms that he helped Larue with her business in exchange for priceless mushrooms – "the diamond of the table" – before she ended their professional and personal relationship with a Dear John letter of sorts. Olive then confronts Ned about their "messy" past, begging him to "stop digging," though she admits that she is bedeviled by too many secrets. Through an awkward game of charades, she finally tells Ned that Lily is in fact Chuck's mother. At the same time, Chuck panics that she has violated the "natural transition" of life and death by coming back for good. Olive realizes that Mother Superior, not Larue, wrote the break-up letter to Hansel, though Mother Superior then reveals that she is well aware of Emerson, Ned, and Chuck's true identities.
Ned offers a somewhat roundabout confession to Father Dedonde, who advises him to "rectify the past," and Olive then guesses that Father Dedonde is the real killer, as his robes show evidence of being in the bell tower. Chuck investigates the tower and finds that it actually housed Larue's secret mushroom lab, but she nearly falls to her doom before being rescued by Olive – who is then in turn rescued by Ned, Emerson, and a well-placed cart of hay. It is then revealed that Larue became a nun for the express purpose of exploiting the convent "truffle fund" for her scientific research, using Hansel to her advantage along the way; though Superior and Father Dedonde tried to help her mend her not-so-pious ways, she was soon pushed from her secret lab – by Pigby. Larue's "fungal genius" with her experiments ends up financially saving the convent, however, and Ned offers his sincere apologies to Olive, who hangs up her habit once and for all and departs, along with Pigby. Finally, Ned tells Chuck the truth about her mother, and he is deeply relieved when she reacts with joy. Includes commercials and promos.
