LOOKING: LOOKING FOR NOW {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The premiere of this drama series about the lives of a group of gay friends living in San Francisco.
Patrick, a gay video game designer living in San Francisco, meets an stranger in an isolated park for a sexual encounter, but it is interrupted when his cell phone rings and he excuses himself to talk to his friends, Dom and Agustin, who were supposed to join him. Later he meets with them in town and tells them about the encounter. They go back to their apartment and Patrick discusses the fact that he has been invited to a “joint bachelor party” for his ex-boyfriend Jason, who is now getting married. He wants to show up to prove to him that he is fine with him being in a relationship with someone else. Patrick gets Dom to come with him, as he feels awkward about going alone, particularly since Liam got engaged only four months after meeting his fiancée, Gabe. The next morning Patrick awakens to the sound of Agustin having sex with his boyfriend Frank. Frank talks about the possibility of having Agustin move in with him, partially for financial reasons. Agustin tells Patrick about this, and Patrick is happy for him. Meanwhile, Patrick continues to search for dates using online dating websites, hoping that he can “kill two birds with one stone” by having his date become his new roommate once Agustin moves out.
Dom tells his friend and ex-girlfriend Doris, a nurse, that he was looking at the Facebook page of Ethan, an ex-boyfriend of his who threatened to kill him. He believes Ethan has changed but Doris does not agree and tries to warn him against contacting him. He gets a date with a doctor who he seems to like, but his co-worker Owen tries to give him helpful advice about online dating, which Patrick dismisses. Meanwhile, Agustin works to put up an abstract art installation and is assisted by a newcomer named Scotty. Dom goes to his job as a wine steward in a fancy restaurant, and in private complains about some of the clientele. Patrick arrives for his date with the doctor, Benjamin, and they sit down together and chat; Benjamin is an oncologist with his own practice, and Patrick talks about his own work as a level designer. After an awkward start they seem to hit it off. Agustin has to work late and so Frank comes over to keep him and Scotty company. Benjamin learns that Patrick, despite being a “relationship” person, has not had a relationship last more than six months. Benjamin tells him that he is trying too hard to win him over and says that things aren’t going to work out between the two of them, much to Patrick’s disappointment.
Agustin and Frank start getting intimate with Scotty and both make out with him after the three of them have been drinking. Patrick forlornly gets on the train to go attend the bachelor party, but a stranger hits on him on the train and asks him to come to a club with him, where he is working as a bouncer. Patrick politely declines; the stranger plucks Benjamin’s business card from Patrick’s pocket and assumes that it is his, and Patrick goes along with his assumption. Dom eats dinner in the locker room of the restaurant and tries to ask a new waiter on a date. The stranger on the train introduces himself to Patrick as Richie Donado Ventura, a barber and “resident in cosmetology.” Patrick reaches his stop and Richie asks if he can call him some time. At the bachelor party Patrick tells Dom about his date with Benjamin and encounter with Richie. Patrick runs into Jason in the bathroom and they have an awkward conversation; Patrick congratulates him on getting married and Jason learns about Patrick’s failed date and gives him encouragement, telling him “they won’t all be bad.”
Dom expresses his frustrations to Patrick that he didn’t get to sleep with the new waiter, believing that his age is starting to show. He advises Patrick not to care so much about what other people think and to think for himself in order to avoid going on more “bad dates.” Agustin remarks on how he enjoyed the threesome he and Frank shared with Scotty, but Frank is not so certain. Dom leaves a phone message for Ethan, asking him to call him back. After leaving the party, Patrick finds the club where Richie is working, and Richie seems happy to see him.
