LOOKING: LOOKING FOR THE FUTURE (TV)

Summary

One in this drama series about the lives of a group of gay friends living in San Francisco.

Patrick wakes up in Richie’s bed and cleans himself up in his bathroom. Richie wakes up and plays bass guitar for Patrick, but he has to leave for work; Patrick has been coming over on a regular basis and enjoys being at Richie’s apartment. Patrick changes his mind about going to work and heads back to be with Richie and continue having sex with him. After that they go out to get breakfast and Patrick says he’s somewhat “paranoid” about getting HIV, and that he gets tested on a regular basis. Richie reveals that his last boyfriend was HIV-positive, but he assures Patrick that he doesn’t have it. They continue to find out more about each other when Patrick finds a pack of trading cards based on the film “The Goonies” for sale and Richie buys them for him; Patrick also discovers that Richie had bad teeth as a child and required braces. Patrick decides to call in sick to work and spend the day with Richie. Richie decides to take Patrick somewhere special, but will not tell him where so as not to spoil the surprise. On the way, Richie asks Patrick about his first sexual experience with another man, and Patrick recounts the time when he was fifteen years old and gave a handjob to a teenage boy he met in computer camp.

Richie ends up taking Patrick to a planetarium, which he says is his favorite spot in San Francisco. While there, Richie discusses his mother and how she sent him back to Mexico from California when he was a child. He also recounts a song she used to sing to him to teach him about the planets of the solar system. The conversation turns to Patrick’s apparent reluctance to receive anal sex, and he explains the reasoning behind this. Richie believes Patrick has “bottom shame” and Patrick thinks he may have a point; Richie says that men in relationships have to be “adaptable” and sensitive to each other’s’ sexual preferences. They leave the planetarium to get hot dogs, and Richie recounts his sexual experience as a teenager with another teen, and he describes him as quite handsome and determined to convert Richie and his family to Mormonism. Richie also reveals that his father did not respond well to finding out that he was gay, and it is a source of continuing tension between the two of them. Later Patrick tells Richie about coming out to his mother in the car after Thanksgiving dinner and how she initially reacted poorly to the news but soon came to terms with it, although he notes that they have rarely discussed the matter since then. He mentions Jason, who wanted to meet his mother but never did.

They walk along the beach together and continue to talk. The subject turns to that of marriage, and both of them think that they would like to do it one day. However, Patrick notes that his sister is getting married and feels as though she may have been pressured into doing so. Richie tells him not to worry about the future so much, and tells him about a fortune teller he sees occasionally, who predicted various events in his life, such as him getting cancer and having children. Richie notes that it may “sound dumb to others” but that it is genuinely helpful in easing his worries about life. Patrick is intrigued by this, believing that it is a sign of an abdication of responsibility, and gets Richie to take him to see her. However, Patrick is at something of a loss as to what questions to ask her, and suddenly feels nervous about the whole thing. Richie realizes that Patrick’s knowledge of Spanish is extremely limited and offers to translate for him. However, Patrick is uncomfortable that Richie would then know his fortune before he does, and they decide to leave. They return to Richie’s place and go to bed together. After giving it some thought, Patrick decides to allow Richie to give him anal sex, but not that night, and Richie understands.
