PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: NYCF: CLOWN PANTIES AND OTHER UNPLEASANT TRUTHS: AN EVENING WITH "INSIDE AMY SCHUMER" {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in this series of seminars presented by the Paley Center for Media in New York. This seminar, presented in association with the New York Comedy Festival, honors “Inside Amy Schumer,” a sketch comedy series featuring Schumer and various guest stars. Host David Bushman (television curator, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks before introducing a series of clips from the show.

Jason Zinoman (columnist, The New York Times) moderates the following panelists: series creator and cast member Amy Schumer (herself); and writers Grace Edwards, Christine Nangle, Kyle Dunnigan, Kurt Metzger, Jessi Klein, Dan Powell, and Kim Caramele.

The panelists touch on such topics as: how the production morphed from a basic talk show on Comedy Central into "the show of [Schumer's} dreams"; Schumer’s frequent use of man-on-the-street segments to provide "unfiltered moments of honesty"; if Schumer and her crew might crack under pressure in their third season, as occurred with comedian Dave Chappelle on season three of the structurally similar “Chappelle’s Show”; ways in which the show has grown “weirder” since its inception; reasons for the emphasis on gender issues and feminism; the show's "hilarious" emails concerning censorship issues; online responses to the program being incorporated into a sketch on the show; how much of Schumer’s real-life personality is written into the show; Schumer's ability to expose her own vulnerabilities while going for big laughs; Caramele being Schumer’s sister and how this affects their working relationship; the origins for notable sketches, such as a parody of the television series “Newsroom”; Schumer’s hesitations about being showcased in Judd Apatow's feature film “Trainwreck” and how it compares to her television work; Schumer's apology to "Trainwreck" co-star/basketball great LeBron James for having underestimated his comedic chops; guest stars on the show, which have included actor Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church; how her standup act has evolved. and the show’s potential for an ongoing run.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: how Schumer quickly learned to do what's best for her show instead of "doing favors" for individuals; why being part of the Comedy Cellar comedy club keeps Schumer "humble"; the off-putting ways in which celebrities are treated after gaining fame and wealth; the evolution of a sketch involving comedian/writer Tig Notaro following the announcement of her cancer diagnosis; the effect of social media on the show’s visibility; and Schumer's newfound ability to enjoy "life on the road."

Includes a highlight reel of clips from “Inside Amy Schumer,” including a sketch wherein Schumer begs God (portrayed by Giamatti) to be free of a sexually transmitted disease.
