IT CROWD, THE: THE WORK OUTING {SECOND SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The second season premiere in this comedy series about the socially inept, basement-dwelling computer experts at London's Reynholm Industries. In this episode, Jen is pleased when a co-worker, Philip, invites her out to the theater, though less so when Moss and Roy invite themselves along as well. Roy suspects that Philip is actually gay, as he reads the gossip and beauty magazine Heat, though Jen dismisses his concerns. The trio leaves Richmond behind and heads to the theater – where they find that the show is "Gay!: A Gay Musical." Roy is unnerved, though resolves to stay in the hopes of meeting Laura, an attractive TV actress. Jen's confusion increases as she meets Philip's clearly gay friends, including Jerome, and Philip and Moss are both delighted by the campy musical, though Roy is uncomfortable. At the intermission, Roy and Moss are thrown off by the presence of "a toilet guy" in the men's room and Roy uses the disabled bathroom instead, and when he accidentally pulls the emergency cord and summons the staff, rather than confessing, he feigns paralysis and claims that his wheelchair was "stolen."

Unable to escape the lie, an embarrassed Roy describes the "thief" to a policeman, and Moss, caught using the staff toilet, is caught up in trouble of his own. Philip raves about the show as Roy is forced to join a social group of "other" disabled men, and the cast invites them backstage upon learning of the "hate crime." Jen is baffled to spot Roy in a loaner wheelchair and questions him about his apparently acid-inflicted disability, and she is all the more confused to find Moss working as a bartender. Roy finally meets Laura, though she believes him to be both gay and disabled, and Jerome makes matters worse when he assumes that all of Roy's "friends" are faking their disabilities for a laugh. Jen finally confronts Philip, who, after a brief denial, finally breaks down and admits that he is indeed a gay man. Roy is placed back on the van with the rest of the wheelchair group and ferried all the way back to Manchester, and Moss, left behind, continues working behind the bar. Commercials deleted.
