JUSTICE LEAGUE: FURY {PART 1 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

One in this animated television series about a group of superheroes working to defend the world against colossal threats.

The villains Copperhead, Tsukuri, the Shade, Star Sapphire, and Solomon Grundy, led by a mysterious super-strong woman, break into a Gotham biotechnology facility to steal a vial containing an unknown substance. Batman pursues them as they try to get away and attempts to stop them. He defeats several of the villains but is stopped by their leader, but not before pulling her gold necklace off of her neck. Later he regains consciousness and catches up with Wonder Woman, who is out in Gotham; she is becoming increasingly disillusioned with the way in which the world outside Themiscyra functions, particularly with respect to gender roles. Batman is convinced that the woman leading the villains was an amazon due to her strength and since her necklace was of amazon design, although Wonder Woman rejects this idea, saying that “amazons don’t steal.” Meanwhile, the villains plan to raid a gem depository for their next heist, and the woman placates their concerns by offering an “advance” in the form of a chest of gold.

Hawkgirl flies to Themiscyra at Batman’s behest to investigate the recent robberies. She lands and spots an armed amazon unit patrolling down the beach. They spot Hawkgirl and after a struggle manage to capture her. Meanwhile, the villains break into the gem depository and their leader calls out the Justice League using a security camera. After raiding the vault she sends the others away and elects to remain behind for a final task. Star Sapphire transports the villains away while shielding them from police gunfire. Their leader finishes up in the vault but is prevented from leaving by the arrival of Superman. They fight and the woman throws a gas canister at him, causing Superman’s health to rapidly deteriorate. She manages to escape through the police blockade but is confronted by Wonder Woman, who recognizes her as her fellow amazon Aresia. Superman collapses and Wonder Woman rushes to help him while Aresia gets away. Superman is comatose and his veins have blackened. Green Lantern and the Flash arrive as well and Wonder Woman tells them to track down Aresia while she brings Superman to the Watchtower.

Meanwhile, Hawkgirl is brought before Hippolyta and accused of stealing gold from the amazons. She tells them about her association with Wonder Woman and that the Justice League suspects one of the amazons to be complicit in criminal acts. She presents Hippolyta with Aresia’s necklace and she decides to aid the investigation. They visit a tower where Aresia is supposedly in solitary meditation, but find that she is absent. Hippolyta explains that Aresia was not born on Themiscyra; as a child she was a refugee from a war-torn country whose ship was raided and sunk by pirates. She survived and clung to a piece of wreckage adrift in the open ocean until she washed ashore on Themiscyra, and she was raised by the amazons ever since, magically endowed with their superhuman abilities in the process. Hawkgirl finds a stash of books and maps in Aresia’s dresser, and Hippolyta notes that they are forbidden due to Themiscyra’s view of the outside world as “corrupting;” Hawkgirl notes that Aresia seemed to be teaching herself the principles of bioweapon manufacturing.

Superman’s condition worsens, and J’onn’s efforts to help him are stymied by the lack of data on Kryptonian physiology. Green Lantern arrives with an unconscious Flash, who seems to have succumbed to the same ailment as Superman. Green Lantern soon falls prey to it as well. Aresia crushes the stolen gems to add to a chemical substance, and when the other villains question her motives she exposes them to another of her gas canisters, causing Grundy, Copperhead, and the Shade to collapse. On their way back from Themiscyra, Batman and Hawkgirl overhear panicked radio chatter from air traffic controllers dealing with major landing disruptions, and they rush to try and lend assistance. All over Gotham people suddenly collapse and fires and other disasters spring up; Hawkgirl and Batman soon deduce that the male population of the city is being afflicted with some sort of plague.
