ARCHER: THE HOLDOUT (TV)

Summary

One in this animated comedy series about the misadventures of sex-obsessed secret agent Sterling Archer and his eccentric co-workers in the fictional International Secret Intelligence Service (ISIS).

Malory finds Archer and calls him; he has spent six weeks in self-imposed exile after AJ’s birth, but Malory wants him to return. Lana is bitter that Archer ran away, although Archer is still upset that Lana used his sperm to impregnate herself without his permission. ISIS, now owned by the CIA, is given a freelance mission which Malory assigns to Archer: an American spy plane went down somewhere in the jungles of Borneo, and Archer is to secure the plane’s onboard computer and then destroy the aircraft. Archer is reluctant to take the mission, especially after he learns that he will be parachuting out of a cargo plane into an area wracked by a communist insurgency in the dead of night. He boards the plane but refuses to read the dossier on his mission despite the urging of the CIA pilots.

Back at headquarters, Cheryl and Pam reveal the results of a multi-million dollar renovation to Malory, who is very much pleased with it. However, her enthusiasm dissolves when Pam and Cheryl reveal that their renovation is actually an elaborate hologram, and that the office is completely unchanged, save for a mobile robot designed as an oversized toaster. In Borneo, Archer is ambushed by an elderly Japanese soldier who he discovers has been on the island since 1942 and believes that it is still World War II. Archer tries to explain to the soldier, Lieutenant Sato Kentaro, that the war ended decades ago, but Sato does not believe him and refuses to be taken prisoner, asking Archer to kill him. Archer refuses and decides to take Kentaro along with him, reluctantly tying him up and holding him at gunpoint. Later Kentaro tricks Archer into falling into a spiked pit trap, which punctures Archer’s foot. However, Archer convinces Kentaro to pull him up when they hear insurgents approaching their position. Unbeknownst to Malory, Pam used the renovation funds to install a secret Japanese-style bathhouse within the office.

Kentaro takes Archer back to his camp, where Archer continues to try to describe the political and military history of the world after the end of World War II. Sato criticizes Archer when he starts talking about Lana and AJ, and Archer admits that he wants to return and try to be a good parent to his new child. He passes out from ingesting too many painkillers before he can expound upon this. While Archer is asleep, Kentaro uses his phone to look up old newsreel footage from World War II, including the use of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which enrages him. Malory calls Archer again to remind him to complete his mission within the next two hours. Archer convinces Kentaro to help him complete his mission in exchange for getting him back to Japan. Archer extracts the computer and wires the plane with explosives, but the insurgents find them and a gunfight ensues. Kentaro carries Archer away and helps him blow up the plane, thus completing his mission.

Together Archer and Kentaro manage to accidentally find his extraction point. Archer offers to take Kentaro back home, but Kentaro laments that he has been gone too long, and that even if his family is alive, they have likely forgotten about him. Using his phone, Archer finds Kentaro’s wife’s phone number and calls her, allowing Kentaro to speak to her, leaving him moved to tears. Archer returns to the office and faces Lana’s scorn for his long absence, although they start to discuss their relationship and how they plan to be involved in AJ’s life. Archer also reveals to Malory that he was on the planning committee for the office renovation and orchestrated the deception, much to Malory’s ire. Commercials deleted.
